{"id":1198,"date":"2022-09-20T15:39:55","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T14:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/research-student-community\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2022-09-20T15:39:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T14:39:56","slug":"using-it-at-the-university-of-york-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/research-student-community\/2022\/09\/20\/using-it-at-the-university-of-york-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Using IT at the University of York"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know new postgraduate researchers will be busy over the next few weeks, but there are a few things that you can do to make using IT easier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Get your computer, phone or tablet ready to connect to the University wifi<\/strong> <strong>before you leave home<\/strong> &#8211; this means that your devices will connect as soon as you get here. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/services\/wifi\/\">Follow the setup instructions<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Games consoles, smart speakers and smart TVs can connect to our \u2018My Devices\u2019 network.<\/strong>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/services\/wifi\/#mydevices\">Follow the instructions to register your device<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Connect to our IT facilities wherever you are<\/strong>, with services including a Virtual Private Network and a Virtual Desktop Service. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/work-off-campus\/\">Follow the set up instructions to set up your device to work off campus<\/a>.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/services\/duo\/\">Duo two-factor authentication<\/a> is required to log in.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Know where to get help<\/strong> if you have any IT problems:&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you need help getting connected when you arrive please call us on 01904 323838 or email itsupport@york.ac.uk. You can also book a place on our <a href=\"https:\/\/subjectguides.york.ac.uk\/skills\/training\">training courses<\/a> to develop your IT skills<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your Departmental Computing Officer (DCO). Most departments have a DCO who\u2019ll be able to support you with various aspects of using IT. Find yours: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/dco\/list\/\">List of DCOs<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stay secure<\/strong>. Your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity. You need to keep them safe. <strong>Never share your password<\/strong>, and if anyone else does know it, you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/security\/password\/change\/\">change your password<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Learn how to spot scams<\/strong> like phishing emails and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/security\/\">get more IT security advice on our website<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Find out about High Performance Computing facilities to support your research<\/strong> &#8211; no matter what your subject area is.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/research-computing\/\">Research Computing<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/it-services\/software\/a-z\/ms-office\/ms-office-365\/\"><strong>Install MS Office 365 free of charge<\/strong><\/a> so that you can use MS Office on up to five different devices.
