I became a PGR Buddy volunteer in 2023, and I would love to share what it is all about.

As a PGR Buddy, you will be there to support new students, both academically and socially. You will guide them through university resources, research practices, and administrative stuff, basically being the go-to person for any questions or concerns. You will help tackle any issues they might have or point them in the right direction for more help. Plus, you will play a big part in helping them feel welcome and part of the academic community.

Based on my experience, here are some of the best parts about being a Buddy:

Personal Growth and Leadership: Being a PGR Buddy helps you build leadership and interpersonal skills, which are super valuable in both academia and beyond.

Networking: You will connect with new students and staff, expanding your academic and professional network.

Community Building: By volunteering, you are helping to create a supportive and inclusive environment. Welcoming new students and helping them settle in fosters a sense of community that makes the experience better for everyone.

Personal Fulfilment: There is something really rewarding about helping new students navigate the challenges of postgraduate research.

Boosting Your CV: It is a great addition to your resume. It shows that you are committed to helping others, can manage responsibilities, and are actively involved in the academic community.

Being a PGR Buddy is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference for new postgrad students. It is a chance to give back to your academic community, develop valuable skills, and grow your network.

Thanks for reading!

Cheers,
Yoana.

If you’d like to support new PGRs, you can sign up to be a PGR Buddy below (deadline 27th September 2024)

Apply to become a PGR Buddy

Hi Everyone, I am Yoana, a PhD student in Politics, International Relations, and Environment.
