{"id":510,"date":"2020-09-30T18:38:09","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T17:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/research-student-community\/?p=510"},"modified":"2020-09-30T18:38:09","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T17:38:09","slug":"thrive-survive-phd-intro-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/research-student-community\/2020\/09\/30\/thrive-survive-phd-intro-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Thrive &amp; Survive in Your PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome to this exciting new chapter as you begin your PhD journey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope you&#8217;ve had a great start to the year so far and are settling into your programme well, whether here in York or from afar. <\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>So right now, you might still be trying to process all the information you&#8217;ve recently received. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>You might be buzzing with loads of questions, or just raring to go!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Or maybe you&#8217;re trying to figure out what PhD life will really be like in the next few years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Or you&#8217;d simply like to meet some other PhD researchers and hear their experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If so, please come along to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/research\/graduate-school\/support\/thrive-survive-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>How to Thrive &amp; Survive in Your PhD<\/strong> <\/a>sessions, organised by PhDs for PhDs! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll hear personal experiences from other PhD students who are on the same journey as you (just a little further along), and some post-docs who have recently graduated and have wisdom to share from &#8216;the other side&#8217;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;ll share their stories, offer insights about the joys and challenges of doing doctoral research, and offer practical suggestions for making the most of your time in the PhD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are safe, supported peer-only sessions where you&#8217;ll get to learn about aspects of the doctoral experience that are not commonly found in most official literature around doing a PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;ll also be lots of opportunity for small group discussion, to ask questions, and to meet and connect with other new PhD researchers from all departments who have just started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s also a session especially for international students, where we&#8217;ll talk more about adapting to life, culture and the educational system in York\/UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All details are below, or contact the PGR Liaison Officer (Jamie) if you have any queries: <a href=\"mailto:PGR-liaison-officer@york.ac.uk\">PGR-liaison-officer@york.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">How to Thrive &amp; Survive in your PhD (main sessions)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday 28 October 2020 OR Wednesday 10 February 2021<\/li>\n<li>1 &#8211; 3pm GMT<\/li>\n<li>Via Zoom (link will be emailed out a few days before.
