I\u2019m currently a postgraduate student, but I\u2019ve been an International Student Ambassador since the first year of my undergraduate studies. <\/span>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he role has given me so many new skills and experiences<\/span>. I&#8217;m going to share my story and help you decide if it&#8217;s the role for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Am I the right fit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was unsure about trying for the role in 2018 as I wasn\u2019t sure if I was the right fit<\/span>. A<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t the time I was still trying to settle into life in the UK. However, the university welcomes <\/span>anyone, regardless of their background. T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he flexibility and casual nature of the job attracted me<\/span> and the<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> application process was fairly straightforward<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It was the first job I actually applied for a<\/span>t<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> university, so it was a big milestone for me! <\/span>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he only other job I<\/span>&#8216;d<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had was a part-time Teaching Assistant role in my gap year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International Student Ambassador &#8211; what does the role entail?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he<\/span> role has<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> many different responsibilities, from delivering campus tours to prospective students, to answering questions on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/chat\/\">student chat<\/a>. Outside of these though, there are many other opportunities, as the role is super varied! <\/span>Since becoming an ambassador I have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>done a <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">campus tour livestream on Facebook<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>featured in<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/J_A_tEWYg8I\">videos for the university<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>p<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rovide<\/span>d<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a city tour to the university\u2019s Southeast Asian representatives<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helped test<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a virtual event platform <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and even proofread English-Malay translations of marketing materials! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delivering campus tours sounded daunting at first and being on camera was admittedly scary with how self-conscious I am<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> H<\/span>owever,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> looking back, they ended up being invaluable experiences <\/span>that <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">helped me gain new skills. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I<\/span> myself<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> benefited greatly from t<\/span>he <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">insight provided by current students w<\/span>hen I applied for university. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I couldn\u2019t afford to fly over for open days<\/span> so it was the best way to get a student&#8217;s perspective.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I\u2019m grateful that, as an ambassador, I&#8217;ve been able to help other international prospective students like I was.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the benefits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout my time as an International Student Ambassador, I\u2019ve gained so many new experiences and highly recommend a<\/span>pplying<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As it\u2019s a casual position, you don\u2019t have fixed hours, so you can accept shifts when you\u2019re able to do them<\/span>. This<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mak<\/span>es<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> it possible and easy to fit the role around your studies and other commitments. I\u2019ve been able to fit my ambassador work around my other commitments like volunteering, being a Student Blogger, working as an Events Steward for the university and a<\/span>mongst other things<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The role has challenged me yet has also bolstered my CV.<\/span> It<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has allowed me to meet new people and work with the lovely International Recruitment team.
