You get your public exam results back and w<\/span>onder where to go next. For many, studying abroad has become one of the options. You<\/span>‘re excited to see how your life w<\/span>ill change when immersed in a new culture yet concerned about b<\/span>eing in unfamiliar surroundings. Here, I\u2019ll share my experience as an international student at a UK university<\/span>. I hope the blog can provide you with a clearer picture of what adapting to a new environment is like! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural differences and language barriers<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be realistic. While you may have heard of the benefits <\/span>of studying abroad, it goes without saying that <\/span>it has its challenges. Cultural shocks are inevitable and sometimes <\/span>you can feel a bit awkward. My culture is very different to that in the UK which made me feel quite awkward at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not a native English speaker and language barriers were also a problem from time to time. This was especially prominent in my first few months after arriving. Socialising with my flatmates was harder than I thought it would be because we spoke so differently. Colloquial English isn<\/span>‘t taught in textbooks<\/span>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new learning environment<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This <\/span>was another great challenge of mine. Interactive discussions and debates in seminars require students to think on their feet.<\/span> W<\/span>e never h<\/span>ad this style of learning back a<\/span>t home. The amount of student-led and independent learning made me realise I neede<\/span>d to put double the effort into my assignments to g<\/span>et the best results. I remember<\/span> struggling t<\/span>o contribut<\/span>e in class discussions<\/span>. I had a hard time coping with frustration that came from unexpected setbacks. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About homesickness<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I thought homesickness wouldn\u2019t affect me as much, but it turned out it did. After months of not being at home, I started to miss home. I misse<\/span>d the food, my friends and family, and the places I\u2019m familiar with. I<\/span> particularly struggled when I saw my flatmates\u2019 parents helping them to move in<\/span> or when t<\/span>here were festivals at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A life breakthrough<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It seems scary, doesn\u2019t it? NEVERTHELESS, for me, the decision to study at a UK university was definitely worth it. Why? Because it\u2019s life changing. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s life changing because my global vision has widened by a<\/span>ctively confronting the cultural differences and language barriers. Yes, you\u2019ll always feel awkward when cultural shock hits, but this is where I\u2019ve learned to embrace various cultures<\/span>. Yes, I<\/span> felt uncomfortable when things got lost in translation, but <\/span>it motivated me to improve my English. Being surrounded by English speakers provided me with adequate chance to practice my English!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new learning environment h<\/span>elped me become more confident in s<\/span>haring my opinions and to think of topical issues t<\/span>o discuss. I was very used to a spoon-fed education and was a passive learner. Since s<\/span>tarting my degree course m<\/span>y attitude to learning has changed and I’ve become a more independent learner. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I fe<\/span>lt lonely for the most part in my first year, yet I\u2019ve learned to become more self-reliant. Back at home, I o<\/span>nly did a few chores. There are very rare times that I need to cook. Being alone has pushed me to do all these tiny little things all by myself. I<\/span>‘ve event started to develop an interest in exploring new recipes<\/span> and finding methods to replace Asian ingredients that a<\/span>ren’t available in the UK!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coping at a UK university<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I think studying abroad is<\/span>n’t for everyone<\/span>. However, the point to emphasise <\/span>here is that t<\/span>he challenges <\/span>you face w<\/span>ill help you grow. What’s more, there are often ways to deal with those insecure times. Making friends <\/span>from your own culture will <\/span>boost your confidence and provides someone to explore your new reality with. Joining societies w<\/span>ill also help ease your insecurities as you will be around like-minded people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studying a<\/span>t the University of York<\/a> was a turning point in my life. I know it\u2019s a cliche, but I would<\/span>n’t be the person I am today if it wa<\/span>sn’t for my decision to study abroad! If you are given the opportunity, and want to befriend people of different cultures<\/span>, widen your horizons and try to live differently from the way you are used to, then studying abroad or in a UK university might be for you. When all is said and done, growth is always about stepping out of your comfort zone! <\/span><\/p>\n
