For all you singery\/dancery\/actory types out there, York is the place to be, as the musicals scene is massive! There are a number of performance societies here, but only\u00a0one devoted entirely to musicals, and it&#8217;s called Central Hall Musicals Society, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\">CHMS<\/a>\u00a0(Central Hall being that big spaceship-like building that you might have seen on campus if you&#8217;ve been at an open or interview day).<\/p>\n<p>Every year CHMS puts on three small\u00a0shows (one per term) in various locations on and off\u2013campus, two showcases (one in autumn and one in summer term), and one big show (in spring term) in Central Hall (I suppose they have to live up to their name somehow!). I have been heavily involved with the society since starting at York, being the musicals nut that I am!<\/p>\n<p>In my first year, I was in the ensemble of the big show,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\/#!the-witches-of-eastwick\/cjsp\">The Witches of Eastwick<\/a>;\u00a0played percussion in the small spring show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\/#!songs-for-a-new-world\/c8ay\">Songs for a New World<\/a>;\u00a0played keyboard in the band for\u00a0the summer small show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\/#!putnam-county-spelling-bee\/cdek\">The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee<\/a>;\u00a0and\u00a0performed the role of\u00a0Pippin in\u00a0a segment of the\u00a0summer mini-musicals showcase. And so far this year, I have\u00a0had a small role in the\u00a0small autumn show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\/#!dogfight\/rpow2\">Dogfight<\/a>;\u00a0a featured ensemble role in the big\u00a0show, <a href=\"http:\/\/chmssweetcharity.com\">Sweet Charity<\/a>;\u00a0and am set to musically direct the summer showcase! The great news is that there are opportunities for this too!<\/p>\n<p>At university, anyone can put on a\u00a0musical at any time or in any place as long as they have the will, but doing so through CHMS gives you the backing of a number of talented and experienced musicals veterans (not to mention, quite a bit of funding). The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chmsyork.co.uk\/#!committee\/nx5mf\">CHMS committee<\/a>\u00a0is fourteen-strong and whenever a new show is to be performed a select number of them form a panel.<\/p>\n<p>Teams made up of a minimum of a director, producer and musical director (can also include a number of people in other roles &#8211; fundraiser, press and publicity manager, choreographer, assistant directors\/producers, stage managers etc.) then submit a written pitch outlining the\u00a0artistic version for their chosen show and reasons why they think it should be selected.\u00a0The panel then consider all the pitches submitted and\u00a0invite\u00a0the best teams to a spoken pitch, at which the\u00a0team members\u00a0are given the opportunity to explain, in\u00a0greater detail, the various parts of their pitch, and the panel\u00a0put questions to them.\u00a0Once\u00a0this is done, the panel chooses the best team (and they often then audition to be in it!).<\/p>\n<p>It may all seem very daunting and formalised, but the intention is to\u00a0make\u00a0the process fair, and give everyone an equal chance at being part the\u00a0production team for a show. It is also designed to mimic, to a certain extent the hoops one may have to jump through\u00a0in similar situations in the real world!<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is: York\u00a0is literally dripping in musicals (well not, literally), so\u00a0if\u00a0it&#8217;s something you love and want to carry on doing I would strongly consider choosing\u00a0to come here!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month I want to talk\u00a0about musicals at the University of York.
