I\u2019ve normally been the first one in my family to do a lot of things, but it was very strange applying to university with no experience at all. Being the first first-generation student.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My brain was so scrambled through the entire process:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do people know what uni is best?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do people suddenly know how the UCAS process works?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Am I going to survive alone?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ll be honest, the answers to most of the questions took very long to find out &#8211; maybe a bit too long. But looking back on it, I wish there was a mini-tailored list of things to be aware of when applying to uni as the first one in your family.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So that\u2019s where I come in! <strong>I\u2019m going to give you my top tips from a Second Year student who had no idea what was going on in my first year!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. What is a college?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University of York is a collegiate uni. For me, when applying here, I was so confused by the idea that different universities were not collegiate and I didn\u2019t really understand what it meant to have colleges at uni.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Basically, the University of York has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/accommodation\/undergraduate\/\">accommodation<\/a> on the entirety of campus, which is centred around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/accommodation\/rooms-prices\/\">11 colleges<\/a> on two campuses (East and West campus).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But what <\/span><b>actually is<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a college?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The best way for me to describe it is like a <strong>little community on campus<\/strong>, that each run their own events for other people in the college. Almost like houses in Harry Potter, unfortunately, you don\u2019t get the fancy sorting hat when you\u2019re assigned your college.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Colleges especially helped me as the first person in my family to go to university because I didn\u2019t feel alone in the whole process<\/strong>. Specifically, the College President and College Committee were really welcoming and helpful with any specific questions I had.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For me, I was assigned Alcuin (my first choice! And by far the best college, no biases there). As cheesy as it sounds &#8211; it was like a little family who did stuff all together! Money, money, money<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another thing that really stressed me out when applying to university was how to manage money. I felt that other people had advice from their families, whereas I didn\u2019t. However, there is a lot of financial help and information available to you when both applying and attending uni.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scholarships, Bursaries &amp; Grants<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019re doing yourself a disservice if you\u2019re not checking the university website to see if you\u2019re eligible for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/fees-funding\/uk\/scholarships\/\">financial support<\/a>. The website was super useful for me when seeing if I could receive any aid, and often first-generation students may be eligible for some extra financial help!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Finance<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those who get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/fees-funding\/uk\/loans\/\">funding from Student Finance (SFE)<\/a><\/span>, it is very useful to check in advance the dates on<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which your payments are due, so you can plan ahead and budget if needed. Even for those who don\u2019t use SFE, budgeting is a <\/span><b>very<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> helpful thing. You don\u2019t want to end up accidentally buying too many Mcdonalds&#8217; and not be able to afford rent<\/span>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3. Join everything<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I say join everything, I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> everything. My mum always told me that \u201cknowledge is power\u201d and as annoying as she is, she is right. You don\u2019t want to feel alone or isolated as a first-generation student, so signing up for as much as you can is the best advice I can give you (without burning out, of course!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/yusu.org\/student-life\/clubs-and-socs#sports\">societies and clubs<\/a> that you can attend (you do have to pay for most societies though, which is something no one ever tells you before going to uni!).
