I love my degree as not only do I get to study a variety of interesting texts, but I also get to immerse myself in the beautiful and historic city of York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I thought I would take you through a week in my life and give you a little more insight into what it\u2019s like to study English at the University of York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will be pleased to know that my Mondays at University are not nearly as painful as when I was at school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although you may have the odd 9am, it\u2019s not as bad as the 7am school starts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A typical Monday morning for me begins with a big cup of coffee from the University Library Caf\u00e9\u2019s Costa, and locating some books for my course in the library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After my coffee, I headed to my lectures, which were both in the Spring Lane Building on Campus West.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I then went back to the library to finish my reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the reasons I love my degree is that it offers an extensive range of texts, including many I have never even heard of before!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being in my second year, the texts I have read this term are all related to the modules I picked, so there are opportunities to study areas that grab your interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tuesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tuesdays are usually very busy for me, starting with a one-hour workshop at 10am \u2013 which I am extremely thankful for, as last year it was at 9am.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After my workshop, I headed to the Costa in James\u2019 Dining Hall and sat with a few friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We then all headed to our lecture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Straight after my lecture, I then rushed off to my seminar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seminars are a great way of teaching, as they allow you to discuss the text you are studying for the week, in great depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My seminars usually have around 11 to 15 people, which means you get to voice your opinions a lot more effectively and can work in small groups with your class, rather than having to fight to express your ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once my seminar was done, I then headed home to rest and watch some Netflix, and wind down from my busy day! <strong>It\u2019s important to take breaks as well as work hard!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wednesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">As you might have guessed, as a Literature student, I have a lot of reading to do, which means I spend a lot of time working independently, but I also have time to do extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As I am Deputy News Editor for the York society \u2018Nouse\u2019, I took some time to draft my articles for our termly print edition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another great thing about being a student at York is the vast number of societies you can join. Whether you are a huge fan of Taylor Swift, a Harry Potter lover, an avid sports fan, a baking enthusiast, or if you carry a passion for writing (like me), <strong>there is almost definitely a society for you!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yusu.org\/student-life\/clubs-and-socs#societies-a-z\">Joining a society<\/a> is also a fantastic way to make friends and meet new people with similar interests to you. You also get to go to some awesome social events, including fancy dinners, so they\u2019re a great excuse to dress up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My Wednesday finished with me heading into town with a friend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We grabbed a coffee and went to the York Platinum and Light event at the Minster, which was fantastic!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is always something fun going on in York!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I began by doing some uni work in town. <strong>York has some great coffee shops,<\/strong> including a lovely Starbucks with a great view of the walls, near the train station.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I then went to my afternoon seminar for my Victorian Literature module.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Friday, I decided to study in the library at King&#8217;s Manor, which is in town.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This library really reminds me of Hogwarts; it is such a historical building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After visiting the library, I went into a couple of shops in town, as <strong>being at university is all about balance!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enjoying the city<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another thing I love about the city is the beautiful, historical buildings which surround York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, please visit the Minster at some point \u2013 I promise you will be impressed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?resize=426%2C532\" alt=\"York Minster \" class=\"wp-image-12241\" width=\"426\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?w=1440&amp;ssl=1 1440w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?resize=819%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 819w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?resize=768%2C960&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/york-minster-2.jpg?resize=1229%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">York Minster<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reading recommendations and module choices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the reasons I love my degree is that it offers an extensive range of texts, including many I have never even heard of before! These vary from short stories, novels, poems and all sorts of critical essays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being in my second year, I could choose which modulus I took. So, the texts I have read this term are all part of those choices. I chose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/studying\/manage\/programmes\/module-catalogue\/module\/ENG00109I\/latest\">Victorians<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/studying\/manage\/programmes\/module-catalogue\/module\/ENG00107I\/latest\">The Renaissance<\/a> as they really grabbed my interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some of my favourite texts so far have been \u2018Jane Eyre\u2019 and \u2018Paradise Lost.\u2019<\/strong> During my first year, I also loved getting to study Shakespeare! We studied &#8216;The Tempest&#8217; and &#8216;A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a chance to write about film during your degree, which shows just how interdisciplinary the course is. <strong>I recently wrote about The Devil Wears Prada for the compulsory critical practice module for second years<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you think you might be interested in any of these, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-english\/\">explore the English Literature modules and reading lists.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, that concludes my week.
