{"id":12583,"date":"2023-01-12T09:24:43","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T09:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=12583"},"modified":"2023-01-12T09:43:43","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T09:43:43","slug":"my-experiences-as-a-ppe-student-studying-and-socialising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2023\/01\/12\/my-experiences-as-a-ppe-student-studying-and-socialising\/","title":{"rendered":"My experiences as a PPE student \u2013 studying and socialising!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hey, my name is Michael, and I\u2019m a 3rd-Year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/ppe\/\">Philosophy, Politics and Economics<\/a><\/span> (PPE)<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> student in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/colleges\/vanbrugh\/\">Vanbrugh College<\/a>. Studying PPE has allowed me to develop skills in multiple areas, make lots of friends, and have plenty of fun!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three subject areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a member of the <\/span>School of Philosophy, Politics and Economics<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, I take modules in three different subject areas. Each subject focuses on developing different skills<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-bsc-economics\/\">Economics<\/a> is more analytical, and requires more maths-y abilities<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-philosophy\/\">Philosophy<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">involves a lot more critical analysis, looking at ideas and how different sides of an argument are justified<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-politics\/\">Politics<\/a> looks at the practicalities of implementing the ideas discussed<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these areas are all intertwined, and can overlap at times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The PPE student community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a student of three subjects, I connect with a lot of different people<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. When you join the School of PPE at York, you automatically become a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/yusu.org\/activities\/view\/economics-society\">EconSoc<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/yusu.org\/activities\/view\/philosophy-society\">PhilSoc<\/a> and PolSoc, which sets you up to make friends in different places.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love the <strong>co<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>mmunity spirit<\/strong> in the School<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> At most universities, studying PPE means you&#8217;re put in one of the constituent departments, and are assigned supervisor\/s from that department. This means, when you have queries about the other two subjects, you might not be able to get the help you need. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At York, <strong>your supervisor is chosen<\/strong> due to the interdisciplinary nature of their research. I know I can ask my supervisor about the three different subjects, and still get the help I need. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year group also has an elected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/ppe\/about\/reps\/\">Course Representative and Department Representative<\/a>, who bring your concerns to the termly Board of Studies meeting.<\/span> I&#8217;m the Course Representative for my year, and have been for each year of my study. Getting involved in discussions about how to improve the course for future students has been a major part of my degree!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Club of PEP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, there&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/ppe\/about\/club-of-pep\/\">Club of PEP<\/a>, a society which represents every student studying PPE, or any dual combination of the three subjects. <\/span>I&#8217;ve been elected Treasurer for the Club of PEP each year, so I&#8217;m very much involved with the society\u2019s running. I loved helping to organise our trips to Dublin and Budapest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you first arrive at university, you&#8217;re assigned \u2018PEP Parents\u2019 \u2013 2nd and 3rd Years who help you to settle in, and answer any questions you might have. I found it really helpful to have a friendly face (who&#8217;s not a lecturer) to help you out. Plus, as they were in your shoes not long ago, they know first-hand any problems you may face in your course.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s not all work and no play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?resize=381%2C381&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12603\" width=\"381\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Izzy-Dublin-1.png?resize=600%2C600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">delightful dublin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Away from the academic side, the Club of PEP also runs socials for its members. There&#8217;s an annual Freshers&#8217; Ball, which is the first chance for students to enjoy a formal. It&#8217;s also a great opportunity to find out where the <em>good<\/em> clubs are, if you fancy a boogie afterwards!  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I touched on before, we run an annual trip abroad in the Spring Term. Our most recent trips have been to Dublin, Berlin, Madrid and Amsterdam. This year, we\u2019re heading to Budapest! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you fancy staying a bit closer to home, we also run <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a <em>12-hour <\/em>ball! This is like a slightly boozy marathon<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where attendees have dinner and then breakfast at the Hilton \u2013 with clubbing in between! Only brave souls finish this event! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the Club of PEP and the wider School welcome students who would prefer not to drink, through all sorts of opportunities to meet students and get involved in student life. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For something a bit more chill, the new Club committee run a joint barbecue event with the Economics Society<\/span> in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Last drop of advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I urge<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> any<\/span>one <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who is t<\/span>hinking of<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> PPE at York to get involved with t<\/span>he <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Club<\/span> of PEP<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">!
