Hello! I’m Daian. I started studying Economics at York in 2020, just a few months after the pandemic led the world to a standstill. But despite this, that didn\u2019t hinder my enjoyment of my course, nor my involvement in student societies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did I choose York?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As someone who has had an interest in economics since GCSE, I was keen to study it to degree level. But I was quite picky in where I wanted to study. I carefully considered the available module choices at each university I looked at, and York was one of my top choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew I was interested in how mathematics and statistics played a role in economics, so I looked at courses which best aligned with that. With such a wide range of module choices<\/a>, from Dynamic Modelling to Econometric Theory, I knew that York was a top choice for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my time at York, I have never felt as if I was being taught a ‘textbook version’ of economics. Given the level of expertise each lecturer has in delivering their modules, and the breadth of choice, it was truly a unique learning experience. I loved that I was able to specialize early, taking econometrics modules that you often only find at Masters level at most universities! The academic challenge combined with reward has been an incredible experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economics society <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alongside my studies, I’m in the Economics Society<\/a>. It’s a great way to meet like-minded students who study economics or adjacent disciplines \u2013 or just are interested in economics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They run regular events such as research lectures, five-a-side football, to various other socials. It’s a great way to make friends you otherwise wouldn\u2019t make. It\u2019s lovely having a quick chat before a lecture starts, but nothing beats bonding over a bar crawl into town!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the end of my second year to the end of my final year, I served as Co-President of the society. One of my proudest achievements was organizing the Economics Spring Formal,\u00a0alongside\u00a0one of the Vice Presidents, and the Sponsorships and Careers Secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, we worked tirelessly to host our corporate sponsor \u2013 a global elite consulting firm \u2013 as well as guests from the Department. Ultimately, we provided a networking opportunity which propelled the career advancements of our members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was such a gratifying, somewhat emotional feeling to have that as the magnum opus of my time at York. Being able to give something tangible to our members and cement a strong relationship with the Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities at York<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are so many opportunities at York to build your experience, and to use for personal development. I’m proud that I never shied away from any of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as being Co-President of the Economics Society, I took part in a pro-bono advisory project as a Senior Consultant in York Community Consulting<\/a>, (a student-led group here at the Uni of York).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I developed transferrable skills through this role, helping me land an interview at an American Bulge Bracket bank for investment banking. They were incredibly interested in what I’d done at university, particularly this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I managed to get through all the stages and land an internship with them for the summer of my second year. I’ve luckily been invited to come back to the bank the summer I graduate for another internship. None of this would have been possible if I didn\u2019t take advantage of the opportunities here at the University. If I can do it, so can you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
