I am originally from the UK and live in university-owned, on-campus accommodation. I am particularly interested in immunology, and how the body reacts to infections by producing antibodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of university, I love all things creative.\u00a0I really enjoy sewing and have recently taught myself how to crochet.\u00a0I enjoy staying active and like to go for walks across the beautiful campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My experience with a long-term disability at university<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, the University of York has been very supportive and has provided me with support throughout my studies to allow me to have an amazing student experience! The Biology department student services have also been very helpful in providing me with this support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My top tips about what to do before you come to university:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Apply for the DSA (Disabled Students&#8217; Allowance)\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I applied to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/disabled-students-allowance-dsa\">DSA<\/a> through Student finance. This allowed me to have any additional equipment I required to be put in place before I came to university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/support\/disability\/\">disability services<\/a> at the University to arrange a Student Support Plan (SSP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I consented for my SSP to be shared with my department and it makes my life so much easier. If eligible, you may have access to extra time in exams &#8211; which is something I have found particularly helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Make sure accommodation is aware of any additional requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re applying for on-campus accommodation, be aware that you can add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/accommodation\/health\/\">additional information and additional requirements<\/a> when completing your application. This has meant that I can be in a ground-floor room, which is ideal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Make sure to bring all equipment necessary for you to manage your condition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I made sure to create a checklist of everything I needed. I brought things like tablets, a seat cushion for my desk chair, and a mattress topper for my bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Be sure to join Facebook groups and Instagram pages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are usually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/new\/undergraduate\/getting-ready\/support\/\">pages for freshers&#8217; on Facebook<\/a>. These pages are really good for meeting people from your accommodation, and course. It\u2019s also an opportunity to meet other disabled students that you can relate to.
