Hi! I\u2019m Millie, and I am currently studying MA <\/a><\/span>Applied Ethics and the Governance of Data Privacy <\/span><\/a>at York. I completed my undergraduate degree in PPE last year from the University of Sussex, so I’m new to York this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

This blog will give you some insight into the opportunities and experiences studying with the Department of Philosophy at York.<\/p>\n

What makes my course unique?<\/h2>\n

Choosing where to study an MA is a massive decision. I noticed a lot of the Philosophy of AI programmes were either completely theoretical or heavily technical. York has the perfect balance between the two. The modules are grounded in practical problem-solving, presenting solutions to real issues. <\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve developed a strong philosophical foundation to these problems, and engaged in insightful debates about AIs prominence in our lives. The Department also offers <\/span>Problem Based Learning<\/span><\/a> modules wh<\/span>ere we work as a group to develop solutions to current technological ethical problems. I’ve developed unique skills in problem-solving. These modules were a big draw for me choosing York.<\/p>\n

My course has attracted students from a wide range of backgrounds. I have the pleasure of studying with software engineers, practising lawyers, data analysts and business consultants. Having discussions<\/span> with classmates who have such different knowledge and expertise has given me a well-rounded and multidisciplinary understanding of topics in the philosophy of AI.<\/p>\n

Some courses offer<\/span> practical dissertations, with internships organised by the Department. I love the flexibility, and I’m looking forward to deciding whether to do this or a more traditional written piece.<\/p>\n

The Department\"The<\/h3>\n

The Department itself is the highlight of studying at York! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. There are postgraduate social activities like weekly coffee mornings, events at Halloween and Christmas and social activities both on campus and in the city centre. The Philosophy Society<\/a> also works closely with the Department, hosting a range of talks and socials.<\/p>\n

With so much going on, my nerves about being a new student at York went away quickly.<\/p>\n

The academics are really engaging and supportive. It\u2019s amazing to study under experts <\/span>on the cutting edge of AI research. The step up to postgraduate study felt daunting, but everyone was so understanding and supportive.<\/p>\n

Opportunities to develop<\/h3>\n

\"Millie<\/p>\n

The Department offers so many opportunities for students to develop. I attended the launch of think tank <\/span>Big Brother Watch\u2019s new campaign<\/span><\/a> about the privacy concerns digital currency. I expressed interest to my tutor, who then<\/span> recommended me to this event!<\/p>\n

The Department also hosts guest speakers from other institutions. They take place most weeks during term time, covering a wide range of topics. Topics this year have included: moral responsibility; self-representation in dreams; and deontology. They’re a great opportunity to make connections, and broaden your knowledge beyond what you’ll learn on your course.<\/span><\/p>\n

I can honestly say that studying my MA at York is the best decision I have ever made. The academics and staff are so engaging and supportive, and there are so many opportunities to develop your knowledge, make connections, and learn new and relevant skills. I’m looking forward to continuing to be at the forefront of AI philosophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
