Hello! <\/em>My name’s Nehal and I am pursuing an MA in History of Art (Architectural History and Theory)<\/a>. As a master’s student, and especially international, the days building up to moving day can be quite unnerving. I am here to assure you that when you arrive, you will not be by yourself!<\/em><\/p>\n

Why History of Art?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Having completed my undergraduate in architecture, I have always found myself drawn to the pre-research more than the design of a building or in some cases the research done after 1000 years of a built structure! My undergraduate dissertation started with research on the socio-culture and community of a city, with the culmination of its representation in the form of an experiential museum design. At the end of it, I realized my interest in community and my curiosity to know about things, especially historically. The discipline passion and enthusiasm for research are what excited me to pursue my MA in History of Art with a specialization in architecture.<\/p>\n

Why I chose York <\/strong><\/h5>\n

A few years ago, I visited the United Kingdom with my family and fell in love with the country, its culture, architecture and discipline. When it came time to decide on a place for my MA degree, there were no questions – as an avid history and museum lover, York seemed like the most suitable place. One of my major priorities while looking for a university was having a reputable research wing. The standing and stature of the Department of Art History at York caught my attention when I first learned about it. One of the best art history departments in the UK, it places a high priority on the calibre and significance of its studies. This indicates that the course offers access to first-rate facilities and upholds strict professional standards.<\/p>\n

Another reason why I chose York was the flexibility and variety of the course. The MA History of Art<\/a> at York has a wide range of specializations within the course. It has allowed me to tailor my studies to my interests and goals. In addition to architecture-focused modules, I have had the privilege of studying modules focused on fashion, politics, and Renaissance art to name a few.<\/p>\n

The People of York<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Choosing to pursue an MA degree is a significant financial, social, and professional decision. To be honest, I was a little concerned about how I was going to handle things at first. Since the course was very different from my undergraduate degree, I felt a little underprepared. Having come from the design industry, I had very little writing experience, so I experienced a lot of firsts in academics. The faculties I have had the privilege of calling my professors have supported me through it all and have provided me with an understanding of every challenge I have faced. If you ever find yourself in such circumstances, the institution offers significant support for international students in the areas of academics, skill development, and mental health.<\/p>\n

I’ve always enjoyed learning about other people and cultures, and York has made it easier for me to do just that. I’ve been able to create a community of my own with like-minded people from all over the world and age ranges, and they’ve helped me grow tremendously. In actuality, I learned from a wide range of students in the classroom because of their varied experiences. As you study, you’ll be able to participate in a variety of initiatives and obtain a wealth of experience.<\/p>\n

Campus and City of York<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Being the leading research university is important, but the most influential for me was the sense of community that comes in York. The campus spans over 500 acres and is nestled outside the city centre, which has allowed it to create a community living of its own. Walking through the campus, stumbling upon a student accommodation amid department buildings encircled with trees and public spaces, intrigued me as an architect.<\/p>\n

I chose to live in Leeds since I had a close friend there, but this has just enhanced my experience. I have had the privilege of exploring both cities throughout my academic year in the United Kingdom. During my commute to York for studies and social gatherings, I have witnessed some of the most breathtaking sunsets and rural views thanks to the excellent public transportation system.<\/p>\n

The city of York itself is a beautiful English town with a lot of historical importance. If you are a history nerd like me then you\u2019re sure to fall in love with this city like I did. As I already work on my deadline for my dissertation, take it from me, the year goes by fast! You will want to make the most of your time as a student at York.<\/p>\n
