This was to support and educate us on good research practice and address any worries we had throughout the experience. I’m Olivia and I study Peace and Conflict within the University of York. I am excited to talk about the placement opportunities that York has to offer which enticed me to come here! In our blog, my placement partner and I will be discussing our time in Cape Town. We will provide insight into the important research skills we were able to develop in the process. In addition to the exciting things we were able to do in South Africa in our down time! Whilst the placement is run by CAHR, my course was given the opportunity despite being within the politics department. So I was also given the chance to meet new people from other departments! University is about grasping the unique opportunities available to you and I hope many of you will be excited to take part in the placements in either York or South Africa!

I’m Vanessa and I study Applied Human Rights at the University of York. I want to share with you the reasons why doing a course in the Centre of Applied Human Rights (CAHR) is such an enriching experience. In my co-written blog, I’ll mention some of the opportunities the centre offers focusing on the placement programme I did in South Africa. I’ll also include wider human rights related activities the University proposes to its students. One of the most remarkable things is that York became the UK’s first ‘human rights city’ in 2017. Hence various events are in partnership with the city network. Studying at CAHR means gaining invaluable insights and skills that will empower you to make a significant impact on human rights issues and advocate for positive change in the world.
