York is a city full of charm, history, and great food. As a postgraduate student here, I\u2019ve had the chance to explore many of its culinary delights, and trust me, there\u2019s something for everyone. Whether you\u2019re a foodie or just looking for a good meal, York has a diverse range of restaurants, cafes, and pubs to discover. Here are some of my personal favourites.<\/p>\n

Restaurant Week: your chance to eat like royalty on a budget<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Twice a year, during Restaurant Week<\/a>, restaurants across the city offer special deals ranging from \u00a35 lunches to \u00a330 three-course meals. It\u2019s the perfect time to explore new places and treat yourself to a high-end meal at a fraction of the usual price. I\u2019ve discovered some real gems during this event, including Ambiente Tapas, Malmaison, and Tomahawk Steakhouse. Trust me, you won\u2019t regret making the most of these deals!<\/p>\n

Cafes: perfect for a study break or catch-up<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Brew and Brownie<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When I need a break from my studies (or my Netflix binge), Brew and Brownie is the place to go. It\u2019s a cosy little caf\u00e9 just off the main shopping streets, offering amazing cakes and excellent coffee. The brownies here are legendary, and the flat white is just the right balance of rich and smooth. It\u2019s the perfect spot for a solo study session or catching up with friends over a cup of something warm.<\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 No.8<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re looking for somewhere to indulge in a proper brunch,\u00a0Caf\u00e9 No.8\u00a0on Gillygate is a must. The food is fresh, the atmosphere is warm, and the menu features everything from avocado toast to decadent cakes. It\u2019s one of those spots where you can settle in for hours, sipping coffee and letting time slow down for a bit. I highly recommend their lemon drizzle cake \u2013 it\u2019s a slice of heaven.<\/p>\n

Restaurants: a step up in dining<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ambiente Tapas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For a relaxed and delicious dinner with friends,\u00a0Ambiente Tapas\u00a0is one of my favourite places in York. Located on Fossgate, this Spanish tapas bar offers a fantastic selection of small plates that are perfect for sharing. Whether it\u2019s chorizo, calamari, or patatas bravas, every dish is packed with flavour. Sharing food with friends always makes the meal feel special, and Ambiente nails that warm, communal vibe. It\u2019s ideal for a group outing.<\/p>\n

Malmaison (Sora)
\n<\/strong>If you\u2019re looking for something a bit more elevated,\u00a0Sora\u00a0at\u00a0Malmaison\u00a0offers an incredible dining experience. Set on the 7th floor, the views of York are breathtaking, and the food is equally impressive. I\u2019ve had their bento box, which comes with sushi, grilled meats, and refreshing salads \u2013 a perfect combination of light and indulgent. If you\u2019re after a stunning setting with great food, this is the place to go.<\/p>\n

Tomahawk Steakhouse<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When I\u2019m in the mood for a hearty steak,\u00a0Tomahawk Steakhouse\u00a0is my go-to. This place knows how to do steak right, offering everything from an 8oz rump to a huge 36oz tomahawk steak that\u2019s perfect for sharing. The set three-course meals, which can cost as little as \u00a320, are a steal. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is lively, and the food is consistently excellent. This is the choice for a special night out or a celebratory dinner.<\/p>\n

Pubs: cozy spots for comfort food<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The House of the Trembling Madness<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For a unique pub experience,\u00a0The House of the Trembling Madness\u00a0is a must-visit. Situated in a medieval building, this pub is packed with character. The food is hearty, and they have a fantastic selection of craft beers. I recommend their venison pie \u2013 it\u2019s the perfect comfort food for a chilly afternoon. It\u2019s a great spot to unwind after a busy day or catch up with friends over a pint.<\/p>\n

The Blue Bell<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For a more traditional pub experience, The Blue Bell on Fossgate is my go-to. It\u2019s a charming, unpretentious pub where you can enjoy some classic British comfort food, like pie and mash or a Sunday roast. The chilled vibe and homely meals make it the perfect place to wind down after a long week of studying.<\/p>\n

Food markets: a taste of York\u2019s street food scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Shambles Market<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re in York and looking for something quick,\u00a0Shambles Market\u00a0is the place to be. This lively market has a range of food vendors offering everything from gourmet burgers to fresh Thai curries. It\u2019s the perfect spot for a quick bite while you explore the city. It\u2019s an essential stop for any foodie.<\/p>\n

Dessert: the sweet side of York<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Heavenly Desserts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After a big meal, what\u2019s better than some dessert? Heavenly Desserts on Blake Street is a frontrunner for something sweet. They serve up all things sweet from baklava to mochi, and their sticky toffee pudding is divine. It\u2019s the ultimate pick-me-up \u2013 warm, rich, and oh-so-sweet.<\/p>\n

York is a city that knows how to satisfy all kinds of cravings, there\u2019s something for every palate. As a postgraduate student, I\u2019ve loved exploring the city\u2019s food scene, and I\u2019m still discovering new gems.
