A bit about me<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hi! My Name is Carley. I am from Chicago and a postgraduate student at the University of York. I am a full-time student in the MA Roman Archaeology<\/a>. The ancient Romans have always fascinated me and what better place to study them than in a town that used to be a Roman settlement! Did you know York was once known as Eboracum? I’m going tell you about my experience studying archaeology as a postgraduate student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why I chose to study archaeology at York<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As an international student from the US, I don\u2019t have to worry about a language barrier studying in England. The town is so beautiful and filled with history. It’s not too big so it’s very walkable. I walk to class any chance I get! On the other hand, the transportation is great. I can conveniently take a bus to either campus or into town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have found it very easy to make friends in my classes. Everyone has been very kind and welcoming; both students and staff. The University holds many postgraduate events that give you a chance to meet other students! The Department of Archaeology<\/a> has great facilities<\/a> and a world-class reputation. The city has so many study spots I love to take advantage of when I want a change of scenery. Sophie’s Caf\u00e9<\/a> on either bridge (they have two locations) has been my favorite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How studying postgraduate archaeology has enhanced my career development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There have been many opportunities to gain practical experience and skills during my time here. I am taking the Artefacts and Materials Analysis<\/a> module and we have been doing a lot of hands-on activities and lab work. My supervisor has been a great help as well. She is always available to meet and has given me career advice and has worked with me in finding fieldwork opportunities. There have been volunteering sessions working with different types of artefacts in the Post Excavation and Archive Lab<\/a>, which for me was a fun way to learn how to clean and handle different artefacts which is a necessary skill in archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the staff in the Department are very supportive. You can tell that they really love what they do. They take time to answer any questions you have during or after lectures. They have different specialties and are always willing to share their expertise. This is very beneficial whether you’re researching for a project or want subject-specific career advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assessment essays are semi-structured, so there is room for you to research something that follows your interests. You get detailed feedback on each assessment. It’s invaluable in helping refine your writing skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I have really enjoyed my time at York so far. The staff are amazing, both the campus and town are gorgeous, and there is always something to do if you want to keep busy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are so many opportunities to enhance your expertise. You’ll refine your analysis and report writing skills. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to develop professional practice skills through fieldwork, or volunteering in the Department or with local heritage organisations they’re partnered with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My advice would be to not be afraid to ask questions and to take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way, you never know how it may help you in the future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
