love with York pretty much as soon as I stepped off the train when I came to visit. It is\u00a0a beautiful city, full of history and character and with so much to see and do that in three years you can be sure you won’t get bored of it!<\/p>\nHi there,<\/p>\n
Thought for my first post I’d just give an introduction to what studying at York is like and why I chose it.<\/p>\n
I fell in love with York pretty much as soon as I stepped off the train when I came to visit. It is\u00a0a beautiful city, full of history and character and with so much to see and do that in three years you can be sure you won’t get bored of it!<\/p>\n

The main campus is not far from the city center (about 10 minutes on the bus) and\u00a0is honestly one of the nicest campuses I’ve seen. While other universities I\u00a0looked round had buildings spread all over, everything you could need is on campus which is really convenient. The University of York is also known for its vast population of ducks\u00a0and geese which you will no doubt come into contact with regularly. Being late for a lecture because you had to navigate an entire flock of geese standing in your path or had to spend five minutes watching ducklings chase each other around is a regular and completely acceptable\u00a0occurrence.<\/p>\n
York has a fantastic college\u00a0system. Not only do you live in your college accommodation in first year but you remain a member of it throughout your three years at university and it provides a great deal of support as well as organising events throughout the year. I am a member of Halifax College and this year I have been fortunate enough to be a member of the Halifax College Student Association (will write more about that in a future post) which is the\u00a0biggest (and some say best) college. Although it’s located slightly off campus there is a great sense of community and I honestly couldn’t have had a better year living there.<\/p>\n
And finally (and perhaps most importantly) the course! I am ![\"banner-720-spsw-reception-logo-a\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/11\/banner-720-spsw-reception-logo-a.jpg?resize=300%2C83\"){kind=logo}
so happy I chose to study Applied Social\u00a0Science, it is such a relevant and interesting course, it makes you think about society in\u00a0ways you never have before. So far in my time here I have studied such a wide range of topics\u00a0including poverty and social exclusion,
\nchildhood and child development, mental health policy![\"SPSW-Ref2014_TextSpace\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/11\/SPSW-Ref2014_TextSpace.jpg?resize=300%2C83\")
\u00a0and the economics of tuition fees. The course brings together the disciplines of social policy, politics, economics, sociology and social psychology so you will find the course is very varied which is great if you don’t have just one area of\u00a0interest. I have found the standard of teaching to be excellent, tutors are always happy\u00a0to help and make their seminars and lectures both engaging and interesting. Being part of a department\u00a0that is renowned for the quality of research it produces is fantastic , if you are interested in going into a career in this field York is definitely the place to be!<\/p>\n
