I hope that everything is going well, that you have already received good offers from your university choices and that, of course, you are considering to come to study at York.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I had promised in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2016\/11\/15\/short-guide-survive-first-month-university-york\/\">my last blog post<\/a>\u00a0, I am going to share my list of favourite places in Yorkwith you.<\/p>\n<p>I have been in York for almost a year and a half and still I haven&#8217;t seen all of what the city has to offer. Writing a complete list of every single interesting place to visit in York would be impossible&#8230; so I have decided to share with you my top 10\u00a0places you might find interesting to visit when you next come to York next time (for an open day, a family day trip or in your first term) .<\/p>\n<p>So, let&#8217;s start:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>The Minster<\/strong><\/em>: \u00a0it&#8217;s one of the most photographed sites in\u00a0York<i>\u00a0<\/i>and is almost a symbol of the city<i>\u00a0<\/i>(<em>like the Eiffel Tower for Paris<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2334\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2334 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg?resize=221%2C256\" alt=\"15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o\" width=\"221\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg?resize=259%2C300&amp;ssl=1 259w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg?resize=768%2C891&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg?resize=883%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 883w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/12\/15555350_1328077880576632_1146868595_o.jpg?w=827&amp;ssl=1 827w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The famous <em>York Minster<\/em>\u00a0on a classic northern winter day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century and it has a certain something of Notre-Dame de Paris, making\u00a0it one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals of its kind in Northern Europe.\u00a0Being wonderful from the outside doesn&#8217;t exclude it from being absolutely stunning on\u00a0the inside. I definitely\u00a0recommend visiting it (<em>it&#8217;s free for University of York students<\/em>). If you are fit and brave enough, you can\u00a0go up to the tower to look at\u00a0York<em>\u00a0<\/em>from the sky.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong><em>The City Walls:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>York\u00a0doesn&#8217;t have just Gothic churches or medieval alleys, but\u00a0also Roman ruins. Around 70AD Romans decided to build a fort to defend the territories they had conquered in, then called, Gaul. Around the fort a city began to grow and the Romans, as is their usual habit, built a wall with guard towers and doors all around it. It is a cute and small street that dates back to the Viking times when they built a bridge over <em>River Foss<\/em>. There are loads of small caf\u00e9s and nice little shops, all in old medieval buildings. You can find details about the former use of the edifice on the doorways.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0<em><strong>York&#8217;s Chocolate Story:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>if you are gluttonous as I am, this is the place for you. York is famous for its chocolate factories since the 18th century. In this magical place (<em>where you expect to meet Willy Wonka every 10 seconds<\/em>), you will discover about the art of chocolate making and you will be able to make your own chocolate as well.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0J<strong><em>orvik Viking Centre:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>if Romans don&#8217;t interest you and Vikings are more your jam, then you should definitely visit J<em>orvik Centre<\/em>. Here you can discover everything about ancient life in\u00a0York, so you can discover what people did before nightclubs\u00a0were built!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">6.\u00a0<em><strong>The Shambles:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>at one end\u00a0there is an open-air market that sells everything, from bags to groceries. Then there is a medieval alley, where time seems to have stopped passing. It&#8217;s full of sharp-cornered buildings that have shops on the ground floor. They have any kind of train you can imagine: from Victorian times trains, Royals&#8217; trains, Eurostars and modern trains. It is a nice place to spend a different kind of afternoon and take a picture with the train Queen Elizabeth used to cross the countryside during WWII.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">8.\u00a0<em><del><\/del><strong>Clifford&#8217;s Tower:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>it is what remains of the old Norman castle of York. Nowadays, it has a mix of medieval and Georgian buildings.
