Hello people-who-are-considering-studying-English-Literature-at-York!\u00a0 It may seem far off now but before you know it A-levels will have been and gone, and you\u2019ll suddenly have to start working out how many pairs of socks one requires to survive at university (14 works for me).\u00a0 That\u2019s why you need to begin mulling over exactly which university you shall grace with your presence, and that\u2019s<\/em> why as a second year student I am writing a blog to help nudge you in the direction of York.<\/p>\n

Now I could bamboozle you with statistics about how great the course is and how well it does in league tables, but I\u2019m not convinced that would be useful.\u00a0 <\/span>What I can say with complete confidence is that York\u2019s English department is committed to helping you gain skills and knowledge, as well as making sure you have a good time while you do so.\u00a0 This week for example my Late Medieval Literature seminar class split into two groups of five to study the \u2018York Mystery Plays\u2019, a collection of short religious plays that were performed around York once a year back in the 1400s.\u00a0 Each group was tasked with performing one of the plays, and my group\u2019s modern English rendering of \u2018Joseph\u2019s Trouble About Mary\u2019 (where he moans about her being pregnant with someone else\u2019s child) proved a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

The modules at York are both fascinating and varied; in first year I\u00a0started with\u00a0Medieval to Modern<\/a>, which went from Arthurian\u00a0romance to Shakespeare to Jane Austen to Virginia Woolf\u00a0and\u00a0Translations<\/a>, where we looked at (mostly) classical texts\u00a0alongside modern reimaginings of them. We also had lectures\u00a0running all year on the \u201cKey Concepts<\/a>\u201d of literary theory, which\u00a0helped provide a broad introduction the history of literary\u00a0scholarship.\u00a0York is one of the leading research universities for English, and so\u00a0lecturers tend to be leaders in their field. Despite this (or perhaps\u00a0because of it), York has its fair share of eccentric professors, just as\u00a0one would hope from an English department.\u00a0 I shall name no\u00a0names here (half the fun is working out who the idiosyncratic ones\u00a0are) but I have had lectures involving fiddling (playing the fiddle\u00a0that is), a Marxist critique of the London Olympics opening\u00a0ceremony, and extended performances of Dante\u2019s\u00a0Divine Comedy\u00a0in\u00a0the original Italian.\u00a0 This means that rather than being a chore,\u00a0lectures become an integral part of your week, and not something\u00a0that you will want to skip.<\/p>\n

One of the most satisfying things about the course is the\u00a0interconnectedness of the topics \u2013 the texts you study in the first\u00a0term introduce you to lots of different authors and topics which can\u00a0be followed up in modules you take later in the degree. As someone\u00a0who hadn’t read the complete works of Dickens or the Bront\u00ebs\u00a0before uni, this breadth helped to ensure I had a good grasp of a\u00a0range of literature before choosing my modules for second year and\u00a0beyond.\u00a0 What I would suggest is reading as much from the reading\u00a0list as possible over the summer, because with two books or plays a\u00a0week you\u2019ll be hard pushed to keep up if you want to actually leave\u00a0your room at any point.<\/p>\n

And you\u2019ll want to leave your room, because the societies and clubs on offer at York are amazing.\u00a0 I am involved with Comedy Society, Drama Society and University Radio York (URY) because as a pretentious English student I crave attention and love, but I have also dabbled in tennis, student TV, Literature Society (LitSoc) and many more.\u00a0 Whatever you want to do, chances are there will be a group of people already doing it. \u00a0This year there is even a Taylor Swift Appreciation Society, and although the haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate, I hear it has been immensely popular.\u00a0 First year is a fantastic time to get involved with as much as you possibly can simply because you\u2019re on campus so are at most 15 minutes away from anything.<\/p>\n
