{"id":2697,"date":"2017-01-22T18:21:56","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T18:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=2697"},"modified":"2017-02-06T10:49:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-06T10:49:08","slug":"week-life-psychology-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2017\/01\/22\/week-life-psychology-student\/","title":{"rendered":"A Week in the Life of a Psychology Student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi all!<\/p>\n<p>I thought I&#8217;d give you an insight into <strong>a week in the life of a first year Psychology student<\/strong> here at York!<\/p>\n<p>Some of you may be concerned that uni is more intense than your previous education&#8230; <em>so i&#8217;m here to settle those worries!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/relax.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2703\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/relax.jpg?resize=276%2C183\" alt=\"relax\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So for first and second year, your work is split into 5 modules&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Research Methods<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Development and Language<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Perception and Cognition<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Social, Personality, Abnormal<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Brain and Behaviour<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personally, my favourite module was <strong>Social, Personality and Abnormal<\/strong> because I really enjoy the <em>criminal and clinical aspects of psychology<\/em>. In this module you look at things such as schizophrenia, anxiety, gang crime and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>I also really enjoyed <strong>Research Methods<\/strong> as I loved doing statistics and getting to analyse lots of data using a system called SPSS which is used by professional academics for research. But don&#8217;t worry about the statistical aspects of the degree &#8211; there are students on the course who really struggle with maths and so lectures strip right back to basics (mode, median, mean) and there&#8217;s also <strong><em>tonnes of extra support across the University<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You will have one lecture per module a week (so <strong>5 lectures a week<\/strong>) and you will also do <strong>one practical per module<\/strong> over the year, as well as a <strong>tutorial per module<\/strong> every term.<\/p>\n<p>Practicals provide you with an opportunity to <strong><em>carry out some research and analyse the data<\/em><\/strong>, and then write up your own report whilst tutorials allow for <em><strong>small group discussions<\/strong><\/em> of papers related to the subject area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-738\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/IMG_3232-e1452610568713.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-738\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/IMG_3232-e1452610568713.jpg?resize=480%2C640\" alt=\"Prism Goggle Practical!\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/IMG_3232-e1452610568713.jpg?w=480&amp;ssl=1 480w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/IMG_3232-e1452610568713.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prism Goggle Practical!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Above is a picture from the first practical I carried out in my degree. We had to wear these <em><strong>prism goggles<\/strong><\/em> that shifted our vision 30 degrees to the left, and look at how easily our brain adapts and calibrates to the shift in vision. It was great fun throwing tennis balls at lecturers when you couldn&#8217;t see straight!!<\/p>\n<p>Having 10-15 contact hours per week means you have <strong>soooo<\/strong> much free time for yourself! We went for a <strong>Christmas meal at Pitcher and Piano<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/meal.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2705\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/meal.jpg?resize=720%2C960\" alt=\"meal\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/meal.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/meal.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also plenty of free time to take up a <em><strong>placement or volunteering scheme<\/strong><\/em> half a day\/one day a week. In my first year, I did a placement for a term in a school through <strong>YSIS (York Students in Schools)<\/strong> where I worked 1:1 with SEN pupils in a secondary school and found the experience really valuable.<\/p>\n<p>I got to work with pupils who struggled with reading or maths and required extra support, and often supervised groups of pupils who were working on tasks in class.
