{"id":2885,"date":"2017-02-14T13:17:37","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T13:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=2885"},"modified":"2021-06-14T12:51:34","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T11:51:34","slug":"club-pep-study-trips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2017\/02\/14\/club-pep-study-trips\/","title":{"rendered":"Club of PEP Study Trips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What is the best thing about studying PPE at York?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hands down, I would say that it is the people I study with.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I don\u2019t know of a course, at any university, where there is more of a sense of community than PEP at York.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">This is largely due to the Club of PEP, which is a\u00a0student-run organisation that represents all students within the School of PEP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The club organises events, parties and trips, both academic and social.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">These include the PEP Freshers\u2019 Week, the 12-hour Spring Ball and a study trip abroad after exams in January.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">These events allow you to really get to know your course mates, creating friendship groups, which will enhance your university experience, in and out of the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I currently live with two other PPE students and my best friends at university, almost without exception, have also been on my course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have found that PEP students in general are incredibly driven and passionate people.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s a huge pleasure to hang out with them every day.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Here is a little video about the Club of PEP:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RIGcbqZj2G0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have been lucky enough to make it onto both PEP study trips during my time here at York.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">There are 35 places on the trip. On both occasions, the tickets have sold out in under a minute.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">In my first year, we went to Berlin. For those who haven\u2019t been there, it is out of this world. We had an incredible time. So incredible in fact, that two of the guys on our trip stayed for another three days!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In this blog, I am going to talk about the trip a few weeks ago bureaucrats and students with the highest standard of living of any city in the world.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s a pretty unique and wonderful place.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">As I\u2019m sure I don&#8217;t need to explain, January 2017 was a pretty interesting time for both Politics and Economics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Austria we were lucky enough to meet top diplomats and politicians who gave us a fascinating insight into the agenda for the future of the Eurozone, as well as on the world stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During our five days in Vienna we visited:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The United Nations for a lecture on the UN\u2019s new sustainable development strategy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The British Embassy to meet Sian MacLeod, the British Ambassador to the OSCE<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Austrian Foreign Ministry to meet Michael Linhart, the General Secretary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Austrian Federal is how upfront and honest they are.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">They are used to being asked difficult questions and instead of skirting around controversial issues, they tackle them head on and give their genuine opinion.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">This is very refreshing and provides a unique insight into what is going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All of the officials that we met fit this bill and the insight that we acquired into the issues and interests of a power at the heart of the EU have provided us with a new view on how the coming Brexit highlights of the Vienna trip were not academic.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Checking out a cool city with 34 of your friends. How could you not have fun?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The highlight of the trip for me was definitely hanging out in all the amazing cafes, bars and restaurants that we found.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">It was great to have a chance to just relax after a crazy couple weeks of revision and exams.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s no need to think about work. You can just chill and be with your friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, here are my top 5 spots for taking it easy in Vienna:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>(1) Caf\u00e9 Central<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This cafe has been open since 1876 and has been frequented by Sigmund Freud, Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin. It\u2019s pretty touristy, but it\u2019s a real piece of history and a beautiful building. The cafeteria in the Justice Ministry is hands down the best. It\u2019s on the top floor of one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, with a great view of the Vienna skyline. You\u2019d be hard pressed to find authentic Wiener Schnitzel anywhere else in Vienna at a better price. There won\u2019t be a person in there over\u00a0the age of 35. I first went here a couple of years ago and I just had to go back. We thought that sounded a bit nerdy, but trust me, you have to check it out. When we first went there we were recommended the game \u2018SpyFall\u2019. We were pretty sceptical, but we ended up having the best evening. Cheap drinks and awesome games. When it opens at 7pm, every cocktail on the menu is 50 cents! Every hour the price goes up by \u20ac1, until it reaches \u20ac3.50.
