Ahh, university halls, that place where you\u2019ll spend a significant part of your first year; where you\u2019ll make your first friends and where you\u2019ll make some of your favourite memories.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut what is it actually like?\u201d you may ask. Well, sit back, relax, and get ready to know everything you need to know about your first few days living in halls.<\/p>\n
Being thrown into a completely new environment surrounded by complete strangers definitely sounds daunting, doesn\u2019t it? For the first couple of days it may seem like the scariest time of your life so far, but in reality it is one of the best times you\u2019ll have while at university!<\/p>\n
Make sure to remember a few things for your first few days in halls:<\/p>\n
Before you move in consider buying a door stop, and keep your door open on your first day. That way people walking past can look in and say hi. If the door is locked it looks like there\u2019s nobody there!<\/p>\n
The best way to meet new people is to jump in and say hello yourself. Even if they\u2019re just walking past your door there\u2019s no harm in shouting a quick \u201chello!\u201d or introducing yourself.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t be afraid to speak to people. Even if you don\u2019t feel like meeting new people, the first day is the best day to throw yourself in \u2013 everyone is in the same boat as you!<\/p>\n
Be open-minded. There\u2019s a huge variety of people at York from all kinds of different backgrounds, who all have something different to offer.<\/p>\n
Biscuits are also extremely important on day 1! There\u2019s no better way to avoid awkward introductions and small talk than by offering someone something to eat.<\/p>\n
As well as keeping a ready supply of snacks on your first day, it\u2019s a good idea to join a group trip to the shops or a campus tour, so that you can meet your new flatmates and get talking while finding out about your new home!<\/p>\n
During Freshers\u2019 Week you\u2019ll have plenty of time to get to know your flatmates. York has so many things to offer, not just the clubs, so you\u2019re spoilt for choice with places to go and things to do. Going out for a meal somewhere or exploring the city are both fantastic ways of meeting and getting to know the people you\u2019re going to live with for the next year.<\/p>\n
So while it may sound terrifying at first, living in halls is a great way to spend your first year, as you get to meet new people who will stay your friends for a long time!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
