As an international student, finding your culinary footing in a new city is a rite of passage. York, with its medieval charm and surprisingly vibrant food scene, offers a world of flavors right at your doorstep. Moving past the initial shock of UK cuisine, one of the first things we tend to do is look for the local haunts that suit our unique taste buds. Consider this your official, fully tested food guide to York from a fellow international student at the University of York, walking you through the most coveted food spots.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morning jolt: Coffee culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting your day with a perfect cup of coffee is a global phenomenon. For me, a good morning brew must meet three simple criteria: a divine aroma, the perfect ratio of milk to coffee, and that necessary wake-me-up jolt. Taking these factors into account, I’ve shortlisted the top three local coffee spots.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First place goes to <\/span>Little Blondie Bakehouse<\/b><\/a>.<\/b> Their coffee beans are a strong medium roast\u2014smooth and dark\u2014the perfect balance with the sweetness of their legendary brownies. I strongly recommend a Latte with oat milk here; the blend is simply divine.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, I nominate the <\/span>Cornish Bakery<\/b>.<\/span><\/a> They serve a distinctly fruity and strong espresso that pairs perfectly with their warm winter buns, creating just the right level of Sunday morning cosy. Lastly, I have to mention a chain: <\/span>200 Degrees<\/b>.<\/span><\/a> Their Iced Spanish Latte is worth the queue. My secret recipe? 20 grams of condensed milk, oat milk, a double shot of their medium espresso, and less ice. This heavenly combination is enough to make the Italians green with envy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weekend ritual: Brunch and lunch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While lunch is technically next on the list, it’s often too quick and functional. Weekends, however, demand the luxury of brunch. My current favourite is <\/span>Rise Bakehouse<\/b>.<\/span><\/a> I am a fiend for their fresh mango and pineapple smoothie paired, of course, with the classic avocado toast.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For variety, spend your Sundays brunching at<\/span> Kynd<\/b> <\/a>(seriously, bring back the lemon meringue toast!) and <\/span>Shambles Korner<\/b><\/a>, both offering some of York’s finest, creative brunch options.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final feast: Dinner choices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The options for dinner at York are endless, but let’s start with my weakness: <\/span>fried chicken<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal favourite is<\/span> Clucking Oinks<\/b>.<\/span><\/a> Their chicken is crispy, golden, and coated in decadently rich sauces. <\/span>Pro-Tip: Head to their City Centre branch on a Wednesday night for free wings, and if it’s your first time, spin the wheel for a reward after dropping a Google review.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For grilled chicken enthusiasts, <\/span>Ricos Peri Peri <\/b><\/a>near the train station definitely outshines the city’s competition. Their signature marinade has a perfect balance of smoke and spice. If you opt for delivery, I guarantee your food will arrive still piping hot\u2014a rarity!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, for the best pizza in town. I recommend <\/span>Dough Eyed<\/b><\/a>. This spot offers the freshest oven baked pizzas. Their Parmesan Garlic Bread is oh so cheesy and gooey. A simple margarita pizza will do wonders to your life from Dough-Eyed, just trust me on this one.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
