With the switch from\u00a0your\u00a0hometown\u00a0to a big new city\u00a0surrounded by strangers,\u00a0anxieties can\u00a0naturally\u00a0arise\u00a0a little too easily!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I&#8217;m going to share a little about what led me to get in touch with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/health\/help\/open-door\/\">Open Door &#8211; a team of Mental Health Practitioners and Student Wellbeing Officers<\/a> &#8211; at the University of York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When it started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During my A-Level summer, just as I was about to move away for university, these feelings became a huge part of my life<\/span>. They were<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> impacting u<\/span>pon <span data-contrast=\"auto\">my excitement for university and instead turning it into anxiety. One of the core roots of these feelings for me was leaving a key support system of mine, my family, and worrying about finding someone to talk to if these feelings were to happen again. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How I accessed Open Door<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I soon became aware of Open Door, one of York\u2019s many student support services.\u00a0Open Door is a self-referral system, where you can talk to trained, supportive Mental Health Practitioners and Wellbeing Officers<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">on campus. They&#8217;re there to provide free support to registered students experiencing psychological or mental health difficulties.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether it be a big life event or a mid-week wobble, the\u00a0Open Door\u00a0team will welcome you with open arms and offer supportive and genuine advice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I personally decided to try this for myself at the start of year 1<\/span>. At this point, <span data-contrast=\"auto\">I felt a talk about my feelings starting at university would benefit me greatly. To do this, I used the self-refer form, available on the University website<\/span>. I had to<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> fill in my details, what I wanted to talk about and how I was feeling, sharing however much or little I felt comfortable with. I then received a response merely 48 hours later, letting me book an appointment to a time that suited me best around my timetable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens during your appointment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A few days later, it was time for my appointment. Only a short walk from my accommodation, Open Door\u00a0is\u00a0located\u00a0in\u00a0the Sally Baldwin building,\u00a0usefully right in the centre of Campus West. I was met and introduced to my lovely\u00a0<\/span>p<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ractitioner,\u00a0who then led me to have a seat<\/span>. Once I was settled,<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we had an honest and open\u00a0discussion\u00a0around anything I felt was on my mind.\u00a0<\/span>The<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> p<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ractitioner<\/span><\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">was actively involved within the conversation, creating a safe and healing environment within the appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My decision to book myself this appointment was one I could never thank myself enough for.\u00a0The feelings and mindset I had shifted dramatically after I was encouraged to explore it more within this appointment<\/span>. I <span data-contrast=\"auto\">came out feeling as though\u00a0university is in fact\u00a0somewhere\u00a0to be enjoyed and to have fun!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I would encourage everyone enrolling at York this year to keep Open Door in the back of\u00a0their\u00a0min<\/span>d.<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> <\/span>A<span data-contrast=\"auto\">fter all<\/span>,<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> you never know when you might need to talk to a friendly face!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Neve<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ap-custom-wrapper\"><\/div><!--ap-custom-wrapper-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The thought of\u00a0starting\u00a0university can be a daunting for many.
