Did you know that the University of York has hundreds of societies? Whether you\u2019re interested in cosplay, choir or rugby, York will have a society for you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why join a society?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Societies are an amazing way to make friends with people outside of your course. Meeting people who love the same things as you is a great way to become closer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some societies, like the York Drug Science Society<\/a>, sometimes bring experts to give talks. Meeting professionals in your field of interest is a unique opportunity, and taking this chance to ask them questions is unmissable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are feeling homesick, there is likely to be a society for your\u00a0home country or region, like the French Society<\/a> for me! Joining these societies can give you a source of comfort, as there will be people who are from the same place as you, or who are passionate about that country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining a society opens so many doors of possibilities, and I would highly recommend it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Societies I’ve joined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I first joined York, I was quite shy but wanted to participate in activities related to my passions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gymnastics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before joining the University, I was a competitive gymnast and hoped to continue this sport while at uni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chatted to the Gymnastic Club<\/a> committee at the Welcome Fair in my first week of uni, and I messaged them on Instagram to find out more about the club. Even though I was nervous to join, everyone was super welcoming, and my first session was a success! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through casual gymnastics, competitions and even a collaboration\u00a0with the Parkour Society<\/a>, I am so grateful I decided to continue this sport at university. The community I am a part of is lovely, and I look forward to every session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metal and alternative music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I am also a huge fan of rock and metal music and enjoy playing bass and electric guitar. When I discovered the Metal and Alternative Music Society<\/a> at York, I couldn’t wait to join. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I was initially nervous to attend a society meetup, I’m so glad my friends encouraged me to go anyway! Being able to discuss my favourite bands, such as Ghost and Black Sabbath, with people who are just as passionate as me was a great way to find new friendships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The metal society not only provided me with a community of people who enjoyed the same music as me but also with information about concerts near York, society visits to other towns and a subsection in the general group chat where you can create and join bands! Even outside of society meetups, I have been able to hang out with the friends made there and even go to events with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dog society<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

More recently, I have joined the Dog Society<\/a>. While I am more of a cat person, my housemate convinced me to come to a few sessions with her, and I adored the dogs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a couple of hours on Wednesdays, I get to spend time with cute, cuddly dogs. Doesn’t that sound like a dream? Dog soc is a great way for my friends and I to decompress after a long week. The committee and dogs bring a great vibe where you can just relax, forget university work for a bit, and enjoy the moment. I am so glad I was convinced to join, as I cherish every minute with those dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I have to sign up for societies during Welcome Week?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, you might be thinking, \u201cI haven’t joined a society yet. Is it too late?\u201d The answer is no, it’s never too late!<\/strong> You can join societies and sports clubs at any point throughout your degree. I guarantee you they will all be happy to have a new member and help you to discover your passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When can I become a committee member?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019re integrated into a society, you’ll have the opportunity to join the committee for the following year. While this sounds daunting, working closely with your peers with the shared aim of making your society succeed is extremely rewarding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am currently the social media executive of the Gymnastics Club and have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this role. Reaching out to new people and organising posts requires dedication, but it’s very enjoyable as well. Seeing the behind-the-scenes of how a society works is really interesting and adds to your skills as an individual. Becoming part of the committee isn’t mandatory but is an enriching experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were unsure about joining a society, I hope this has helped motivate you to do so! Societies are a wonderful part of the university experience, and the friendships made there can last a lifetime<\/strong>. Take advantage of all these opportunities and have fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
