Why I chose York<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My name is Nicole, and I am going to tell you about my first semester studying <\/span>BSc Film and Television Production<\/a> at York. I\u2019ve known for a long time that my dream is film-making, and really wanted to find the right university for me to be able to build a future career in the film industry. Although I am a nerd who loves essay writing and research, it was a priority to me, to make sure that I could also learn <\/span>practical skills <\/b>alongside <\/span>film theory<\/b>. York has provided me with just that. I visited lots of university open days, but when I went to York, I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous city, campus and facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes and learning<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before coming to university, I was scared and intimidated that everybody around me would be ready-made Martin Scorseses and that I would be the only one struggling to keep up with the content of the course. However, I have found that it is a really friendly, relaxed and supportive environment. The course is inclusive, so even if you don’t have knowledge and experience of film yet, you’re all built up together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course has a clear and logical structure. It prepares you <\/strong><\/span>for the industry<\/b> and actually making your own films. In my first semester we covered three modules: The Art and Science of Film and Television Production Part I<\/a>, Story<\/a> and Film and Television Analysis<\/a>. I have found that the theory we learn in lectures and seminars supports our work in the practical sessions, where we learn to use <\/span>industry-standard equipment<\/span><\/a>. Before coming to York, I had never used a professional camera before, and now I know how to set one up and film with it. The practical sessions are in small groups, so everybody has an opportunity to use the equipment and learn.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My favourite modules have been Story and Film and TV Analysis. As a shy person, I thought that I would struggle to share my opinions, but the academics are kind, encouraging, humorous and understanding. My confidence has flourished. I found myself being able to share my original scripts and ideas in front of others in a non-judgmental space. I also love the various films that we have watched within these modules.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one semester we have already completed two group projects, making our own short films! Each time I got to take on a new role and challenge myself. I love the<\/span> independence, creativity and fun<\/b> of the group projects. I’ve made a lot of friends and memories, whilst also producing work that I am proud of and which has helped me develop my skills.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friendships and community<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

University is about more than just the classes! Having the right environment and people around you is just as important. York has a wide range of events, activities and <\/span>societies<\/span><\/a>, which means that there is always something for you to do, and an opportunity to meet new people even beyond the first welcome Freshers’ Week. Everybody is in the same boat in terms of trying to make friends, so people are friendly and want to get to know others as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have managed to make lovely friends within my course and also outside of it. I have friends who do different subjects to me such as biology, physical geography and history. I\u2019m also based Campus East, but regularly take the bus or walk to Campus West to hang out with friends or go to events there.<\/span> The School of Arts and Creative Technologies<\/a> also has so much going on outside classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city of York has a lot to offer<\/a>. I have loved discovering caf\u00e9s, pubs and local bands. Another highlight of my time at York was spending time with a friend from my course, at a film festival which was based in York city centre.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am grateful to have chosen York, and excited for the rest of my time here.<\/span> I’ve loved my first semester studying Film and Television Production at York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
