Growing up in Mumbai has prepared me well for this opportunity, so I was delighted and excited to receive an offer from the University of York to study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-business-management\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/ba-business-management\/\">Business and Management<\/a>. It signified a new chapter in my life, with the chance to experience a different style of learning and living in a different country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The beginning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>York immediately felt special. Nestled in a historic, yet modern city, the campus blends decades of heritage with a spirit of innovation. From my very first walk around the lakes and green spaces during Welcome Week, I found the sense of peace that balanced the excitement of student life. With so many beautiful colleges and such a strong sense of community spirit across campus, I made Anne Lister College my new home during my first year. The people I met straight away, from flatmates to new friends, made this transition warm and welcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/my-first-day-at-anne-lister-college56.jpg\" alt=\"Rajas and a family member stood outside Anne Lister College. \" class=\"wp-image-34842\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">My first day at Anne Lister College<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Mumbai to York, I experienced a complete change in culture, weather and pace of life. Yet the people I&#8217;ve met throughout this journey, the new traditions I&#8217;ve explored and the friendships I&#8217;ve built, turned that change into growth. York is a calm, friendly and welcoming city, which has given me space to focus on my studies while discovering so much through conversations and shared experiences with others from countries around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning &#8216;the York Way&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What stood out most to me from day one was how different the York academic experience felt. The Business and Management programme is not just about theories, but about how businesses truly operate in a modern, globalised world. The core modules explore every major side of business, including ethics, marketing, accounting, research and management. Each module is designed to be interactive and applied, which makes the learning feel directly relevant to the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find the course a well-structured balance of theoretical learning and practical implications. It truly prepares you for the real world because every aspect polishes some skill in you, whether it&#8217;s analysis, communication, teamwork, or problem-solving. I personally find group assessments a great way to work with people who have different opinions, backgrounds and ideas. They genuinely want students to succeed and understand that we come from different backgrounds and education systems. They are inclusive and welcoming, always open to giving feedback, explaining concepts and helping with the challenges of studying abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the peer culture adds so much, too. In seminars, I sit with students from everywhere, hearing their stories and perspectives. This cultural exposure through people I meet daily, makes discussions richer and prepares you for global careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campus life and exploration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the classroom, campus life shapes you through the people and new experiences. There is a wide range of sports and societies to join. There is truly something for everyone, and I feel it&#8217;s the best way to meet and make new friends. York encourages you to explore, whether it&#8217;s the cozy cafes across the city or the city walks.
