I know, for me at least, deciding how to decorate my room was the most exciting part! But that should not take away from the importance of your studies. Uni is a very different environment to school since we are taught and learn in very different ways. Therefore, I have found that I use technology and stationary differently now then how I did at school. So to help you, I have compiled some ideas I wish I knew before starting Uni on what stationery and technology I use on a daily basis.

Technology

In terms of technology, I use my laptop the most for note taking in lectures and for doing my independent reading and research. Lectures can sometimes be fast with a lot of information, so I have found that taking notes online using my laptop allows me to keep up with the lecturer best. Lecture slides are provided for us online, so it is also useful to utilise the ‘split screen’ function so I can go through the slides at my own pace while taking notes! Some people do favour a more traditional note pad and pen, which is great if you prefer physical copies of your notes. Similarly, I always use my laptop for my independent work. As humanities students, we have a lot of readings to do outside of the lectures. For me personally, as a history student, all of my readings are provided for us online so it is necessary to have some sort of device to access the work. I like to use my laptop’s ‘split screen’ function to read and make notes at the same time.

When making notes, I always use google docs and the Google Drive attached to my Uni email account to create folders for my specific modules. I find this works great to keep everything organised but, again, it’s personal preference and important to use whatever works best for you! I do see a lot of people using iPads or tablets to take notes with, often with a keyboard attachment or using an apple pen to write with. I use a Chromebook to do all of my work but there is no particular laptop that is necessary for humanities students to use. The main thing is to choose a laptop that works best for you!

I also use my phone in parallel to my studies a lot. Since it is more portable and convenient than a laptop, I tend to use my phone to check my time table on the MyUoY app, have easy access to my library card, food and drink loyalty cards and to check into my lectures and seminars. It’s also great to have access to a map of the Uni on the MyUoY app in case you have a class in an unfamiliar part of campus.

Stationary

While I mostly use my laptop for uni work, I still do sometimes use stationary. That being said, unless you are planning to take notes using a pen and paper, not much stationary is needed, particularly in comparison to what is used at school and sixth form college. For that reason, I would advise away from buying a lot of nice, fancy stationery as it just isn’t really necessary (unless you want to of course!).

Nevertheless, it’s always useful to have a few pens whether that’s for work or general use (I have been writing a lot of birthday cards at Uni!). Paper is another thing it’s good to have. I came to Uni without any paper, not thinking I would need it, but it’s always useful to have and I personally love using it for essay planning. In my history course, we do not have traditional, in person exams, as you may be used to from school. Instead we have coursework style essays and five hour online exams that are all open book. Because of this, I do not need paper for my essays since I write all of my essays on google docs. Similarly, I have not needed any stationary I used for revision in A-Levels, like flashcards or paper for mindmaps since exams are open book. Having said that, this is just my personal preference and you may find that your style of work and revision works better using these resources.

The piece of stationary that I definitely would recommend the most for humanities students is a daily/weekly planner! Since a lot of our work is done independently, it is important to keep yourself and your work organised. I like to use mine to keep track of when my lectures and seminars are, any readings I have for that week and things that I have to remember. Even still, regardless of your studies, Uni life is busy with societies, friends, meetings, deadlines ect so it’s great to have to keep track of plans! Pins are another great thing to bring with you so you can decorate your pinboard!

Studying at university is different to studying at school, so what are the most important things to bring?
