{"id":35282,"date":"2026-05-19T15:39:51","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=35282"},"modified":"2026-05-19T15:39:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:39:53","slug":"how-the-realising-opportunities-programme-shaped-my-journey-to-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2026\/05\/19\/how-the-realising-opportunities-programme-shaped-my-journey-to-york\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Realising Opportunities Programme shaped my journey to York"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Looking back now as a current Master\u2019s student, I can confidently say that my experience on Realising Opportunities (RO) played a defining role in my journey and is one of the very reasons I chose the University of York. Not only did it help me to apply to university, but it gave me awareness of opportunities that I had not considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the first person in my family to go to university, applying to higher education felt incredibly overwhelming. I really needed a structure. I had no idea where to even start, or even what my particular interests were. Lacking an understanding of what university life would be like made me unable to picture myself there. While I was academically capable, I lacked confidence. I questioned whether I belonged in higher education at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why I decided to apply to RO<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I was recommended by my sixth form college to take part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/schools-and-colleges\/post-16\/realising-opportunities\/\">RO programme<\/a>. Initially I was not convinced, but I ended up applying on a bit of a whim. I had the ambition to go to university, but I felt embarrassed to need help. I didn\u2019t have the insight or reassurance that many students with family experience of university naturally have. After consideration, the idea of receiving structured support alongside other students in similar positions felt mostly okay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than anything I wanted to feel prepared. University seemed like such a big leap, and I did not want to look or feel out of place. The RO programme offered not just application support, but exposure to university life itself. I quickly realised there is no such thing as looking out of place! At the time, I didn\u2019t realise how transformative that decision would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What I did during the programme<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the RO programme, I took part in a range of activities designed to support both the practical and personal sides of applying to university. We received guidance on writing strong personal statements, explored what universities look for in applicants, and developed academic skills that would later prove essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most impactful elements was gaining an insight into university life. By participating in events, I was able to experience a glimpse of what the studying would actually look like. It made the idea of higher education far less abstract. Instead of imagining an intimidating, unfamiliar environment, I began to see it as somewhere I could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme also encouraged reflection, thinking about our strengths, motivations, and long-term goals. As someone who had never really seen myself represented in higher education spaces, this reflective aspect helped me build a bit of self-belief. I began to understand that being first-generation wasn\u2019t a disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most useful part of the programme was the starting point it gave me. It was the ability to be in control of my application and experience, whilst also being able to ask a million questions. I remember writing down a list of about 20 questions that I asked all at once! All of which were answered for me in detail by a member of the RO team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best advice I got was to consider doing some relevant work experience before I even start writing my application. And that experience changed my mind completely on what I wanted to do in life. Long-term career planning once felt distant. Giving myself an idea of what I wanted to do in life has driven me to stay in higher education and has brought a sense of purpose to my studies. Now, I have a better idea of where my degrees will take me and what opportunities are available to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the programme supported my studies&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and am now studying a Master\u2019s in Data Science (Human Behaviour) both at York. The confidence and academic foundations I built through the programme have supported me throughout both degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My undergraduate studies definitely brought moments of challenge. Navigating academic expectations, such as the workload and deadlines, was difficult . However, I never felt entirely out of my depth. I had already been introduced to the idea that university requires independence and resilience and was able to adapt. Transitioning from Psychology to Data Science for my Master\u2019s was another significant step. Moving into a more technical and quantitative field required confidence in my ability to learn new skills. The RO team were always available to me if I felt the need to seek additional support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My final reflections<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, being part of Realising Opportunities was one of the most important steps in my educational journey.
