One of my favourite ways to unwind after lectures or a busy week of research is settling down with a coffee \u2013 either with friends or with a good book. The best part is that enjoying York\u2019s caf\u00e9 scene doesn\u2019t have to be expensive. Whether you\u2019re looking for a cosy study spot, somewhere to chat, or simply a great coffee at a reasonable price, York has plenty of budget\u2011friendly options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caff\u00e8 Nero<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Caff\u00e8 Nero<\/a> remains one of my go\u2011to choices for affordable coffee. Students can verify their university email in the app<\/a> to receive a discount on the menu, making most drinks sit comfortably around the \u00a33 mark. The app also works as a digital stamp card, so every tenth drink is free \u2013 ideal if you\u2019re a regular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upstairs caf\u00e9 in Waterstones<\/a> is a lovely, bookish escape in the city centre. Although slightly pricier than the chains, it offers excellent coffee, sweet treats, and a peaceful view over Coney Street. The booth seating is perfect for catching up with a friend. A bonus: if you buy their Book of the Month downstairs, you\u2019ll receive a free coffee voucher to use in the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore Library Caf\u00e9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located beside Museum Gardens, Explore Library\u2019s caf\u00e9<\/a> is a welcoming and affordable spot for studying or meeting friends. The menu is varied and reasonably priced, and it\u2019s easy to pair your visit with a stroll through the gardens or a browse of the library\u2019s shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A slightly unexpected but brilliant option is Fossgate Tap<\/a>. Although known primarily as a pub, it serves reasonably priced coffee in a relaxed, atmospheric setting. Sitting upstairs gives you a great view over Whip\u2011Ma\u2011Whop\u2011Ma\u2011Gate \u2013 perfect for people\u2011watching while you study or unwind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Sheep Coffee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Black Sheep Coffee<\/a> offers a wide range of drinks, from matcha to creative energy\u2011drink infusions, all in a stylish, modern space. Their best deal is \u00a32 coffee on Mondays for students, with a student discount<\/a> available on other days. It\u2019s a great choice if you enjoy something a little different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topping & Company Booksellers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Toppings<\/a>, one of York\u2019s newer bookshops, has quickly become a favourite among students. They offer complimentary tea and coffee to anyone browsing the shelves, making it a cosy and cost\u2011free way to enjoy a warm drink while exploring their beautiful store near the Minster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tips for finding affordable coffee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

York has a fantastic range of caf\u00e9s, many of which offer student discounts \u2013 so it\u2019s always worth asking. Don\u2019t overlook pubs and bars either; many now open earlier in the day and offer quieter spaces and unexpected deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coffee on campus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you spend a lot of time on campus, the University\u2019s Eat and Drink Loyalty Scheme<\/a> is a great way to save money. Through the MyUoY app<\/a>, you can scan your digital loyalty barcode at participating University\u2011managed catering outlets to earn points on eligible purchases. Every 100 points adds \u00a31 credit to your account, which you can redeem on future food or drink. It\u2019s a simple way to save if you regularly grab coffee between lectures. (Note: the scheme doesn\u2019t apply to Students\u2019 Union venues.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re eligible, keep an eye out for seasonal promotions or special offers <\/a>throughout the year, as campus caf\u00e9s often run deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why coffee catch\u2011ups matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For me, coffee isn\u2019t just about the caffeine. It\u2019s a chance to pause, reconnect with friends, and explore different parts of York. As a postgraduate student, it\u2019s easy to become absorbed in research, so taking time for a coffee break helps me maintain a healthier balance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring new caf\u00e9s has also helped me feel more connected to the city \u2013 each neighbourhood has its own character, and discovering new spots has become one of my favourite parts of studying here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re joining the University of York, I\u2019d definitely recommend exploring both the city and campus caf\u00e9s<\/a>. With a little planning and a few loyalty rewards, you can enjoy great coffee, save money, and make the most of student life.<\/p>\n
