‘What\u00a0are they up to in there, those musos?’, I’m sure many outside the department must wonder.<\/p>\n

You see,\u00a0having a building all to ourselves, complete with practise rooms and concert halls, means we can sometimes end up a little\u00a0isolated from the rest of\u00a0university life. So here’s a snapshot\u00a0of just some of what’s going on, from the perspective of a second year music student…<\/p>\n

Monday:<\/h3>\n

When all the music freshers arrive, the first module they take\u00a0is always a large-scale performance of some sort. This year it is\u00a0Paradise Moscow<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>an operetta by Dmitri Shostakovich (pictured above). The brilliant thing is that second and third years can also choose this module and work on the show in some leading capacity!<\/p>\n

And so, most of Monday is taken up with rehearsals (6 hours’ worth!), in which I\u00a0am usually alternately playing the piano in the orchestra and running through songs with soloists. This\u00a0is\u00a0show week, however, so we’re just\u00a0adding\u00a0the finishing touches, ready for the first performance on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon, I\u00a0attend a rehearsal with The 24 choir<\/a> (which has, unsurprisingly, 24 singers). We have a concert of early music (c. 15th century)\u00a0at the end of term and this is one of two weekly rehearsals. Morale is kept high\u00a0with a strict baking rota which means there’s always cake to be had in the rehearsal break!<\/p>\n

Tuesday:<\/h3>\n

On Tuesdays I teach two singing lessons,\u00a0one to a first year WDP (writing, direction and performing\u00a0i.e. drama) student, and another to a third year English student. These are organised through the Music Society<\/a>, which also puts on two lunchtime concerts a week (and holds fantastic end-of-term balls!).<\/p>\n

That evening I\u00a0lead a rehearsal for Vox, a contemporary a cappella choir that I\u00a0arrange music for and direct. We also have a concert later this term (including songs by the likes of London Grammar<\/em>,\u00a0Fleet Foxes<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Beyonc\u00e9), and another regular rehearsal on Thursdays.<\/p>\n

Wednesday:<\/h3>\n

Wednesday\u00a0is usually quite free but this week\u00a0I sit on the audition panel for an opera that is due to be performed\u00a0in summer term, and which I am set to conduct! It’s called\u00a0The Rape of Lucretia\u00a0<\/em>by Benjamin Britten, and we have 6\u00a0hours of auditions after which we have\u00a08 singing\u00a0parts to cast – it’s a tough decision!<\/p>\n

In the evening we have our first performance of\u00a0Paradise Moscow,\u00a0<\/em>which is a well-attended resounding success!\u00a0The first night of any show is usually quite nervy but the first years showed the rest of the department what they are made of with a stellar performance.<\/p>\n

Thursday:<\/h3>\n

In the usual morning module timeslot we look over things that need sorting from the performance the night before. There isn’t much to do, as it\u00a0went\u00a0so smoothly, but\u00a0we polish off some small details.<\/p>\n

Later on that day I do some piano practise before\u00a0the second of Vox’s rehearsals. We add a new beatboxer into the mix and he has an awe-inspiring effect on the sound! This is followed by\u00a0performance number 2 of the show!<\/p>\n

Friday:<\/h3>\n

In the morning I have a rehearsal with a quartet that I lead and play piano in. Last term we performed Olivier Messiaen’s\u00a0Quartet for the End of Time<\/em> for piano,\u00a0violin, clarinet and cello.\u00a0Next term we will play the lesser known quartet by Walter Rabl, but we have already started rehearsals as it’s a tough piece to get the fingers around!<\/p>\n

In the afternoon it’s time for the second 24 rehearsal of the week. We tackle a piece that involves quite a lot of whistling, accompanied\u00a0by a soundtrack full of\u00a0recorded birdsong. It’s Per N\u00f8rg\u00e5rd’s D’monstrantz v\u00f6\u00f6geli<\/em>\u00a0(yep, me neither…).\u00a0It’s incredibly hard music to read but should\u00a0make for a great contrast with the other\u00a0stuff in our concert.<\/p>\n

In the evening we have our final performance of Paradise Moscow <\/em>(see photo above).\u00a0It has been\u00a0the perfect way for all the first years to get to know each other and an excellent module to take for second and third years who are\u00a0performance-minded.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0weekend that follows is\u00a0made up of some much-needed rest after such a busy show week. The music never\u00a0stops, however; on Sundays I play show tunes on\u00a0the clarinet with\u00a0the University Concert Orchestra<\/a>!<\/p>\n

If you’re also\u00a0interested in throwing yourself into as much music as there is on offer, then York is the place to be. It’s worth noting that many of the groups I am involved with are optional extras and\u00a0don’t contribute to my degree mark but my week would be so much more boring without them!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
