I\u2019m currently doing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/careers-skills\/work#placement\">Placement Year<\/a> working in the Performance Materials part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckgroup.com\/uk-en\/company\/who-we-are.html\">Merck Group<\/a>. I&#8217;m a research and development intern in display solutions, within the liquid crystal and reactive mesogens group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did you decide to do a placement?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn\u2019t planning to do one because I didn\u2019t know I\ncould, but I did always want to have the opportunity to work in industry before\nI graduated. I wanted to find out more about the options available working in\nscience outside of academia and decide what career path would suit me better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did you find the opportunity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I attended a Physics careers day in Sheffield and\nwent to the Merck stall. I showed interest in a summer placement but was\ndisappointed to find out that they don\u2019t run them. After some encouragement\nthat I could do a year in industry (which I was not considering doing as it was\nnot available on my course), I had an informal chat with Stephen. He asked me\nto come and see the Merck site in Southampton for an interview and emailed the\nheads of Chemistry and Natural Sciences to ask if I could do a placement year.\nHe interviewed me a month later and then became my placement supervisor!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s your typical day?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I spend my time 70:30 in labs : out of labs. In\nlabs I do independent experimental research; I find this very rewarding and\nvaried and I am in control of what I do as well as my productivity. No-one is\nbreathing down my neck or spoon-feeding me, I seek out guidance when I need it\nbut otherwise I do my own problem solving. Out of labs I analyse data, write up\nwork packages (summary lab reports with experimental and data details) and make\npresentations for team meetings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did you get out of it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have gained a huge confidence boost and\npresentation skills that I am proud of. By working independently on my own\nexperiments as part of a larger team; I\u2019ve learnt how to work flexibly and\nquickly change my priorities, whilst doing effective time planning. Merck has\ngiven me a brilliant and positive insight into working in industry with\nscientists and business people alike. My placement year has put my university\nlife in perspective and I hope I will take final year in my stride \u2013 knowing\nthat grades are only a small piece of my employability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has it influenced your future career options?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I will not be\noffered a job with Merck, as they are not currently recruiting, I realised that\nI would really like to work somewhere like Merck in the future. My placement\nhas changed my perspective on my career potential and I\u2019ve realised that I\ndon\u2019t have to be an expert to work in a specific research area. If I am enthusiastic\nto learn, work hard and ask questions, then I can apply these skills to work in\nmany fields.&nbsp; I think this experience has\ntaught me not to limit my career options and grasp any opportunity; I intend to\npush myself outside of my comfort zone and apply for positions that I might not\nfeel good enough for. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, I\u2019m Megan, a Natural Sciences (specialising in Nanoscience) student here at York.
