When I started my postgrad degree at York, I was amazed at the range of societies<\/a> available. During my undergrad, I joined my previous university’s art society; but the timing ended up not fitting with my schedule, so I didn\u2019t go very often. This year, I wanted to make an effort and I\u2019m so glad I did! Art Society has been a great way to develop my skills and have a chance to unwind outside of my degree. Therefore, I wanted to share a spotlight on Art Society in this blog. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life drawing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"I've<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve mostly been attending the life drawing classes, which take place in the evening. This means there are no lecture clashes, and it’s super relaxed. There\u2019s been three this term – two of them had a professional art teacher running them, and one was a more chilled session run by a committee member. They insisted we all eat lots of biscuits – so there\u2019s another reason to go if you needed one! I\u2019ve learned a lot from the classes this term, and I can see my art improving, which is great. This time last year I was still saying \u2018I just can\u2019t draw people\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked the committee if they could let me know what their favourite sessions were this term. They said, “we really love hosting life drawing sessions as everyone seems to love the opportunity. It\u2019s great seeing people talk and score their work in our break!” The life drawing sessions have been such a good way to develop my own skills and see other people\u2019s skills develop. I\u2019ve found it really helps encourage body confidence and positivity; another reason I\u2019d recommend these sessions to anyone curious.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Themed sessions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Art Soc also run themed sessions, such as their Art Nouveau night, pumpkin carving, Christmas card lino printing and arabic calligraphy sessions. I\u2019ve only managed to make it to life drawing and Art Nouveau night this term, but I always feel welcomed as if I\u2019ve attended every event. The committee told me that they were particularly proud of their Art Nouveau evening as ‘everyone seemed so happy and the vibe was lovely’. They also let me know how happy they are to see people tagging them on instagram so that they can see the finished artworks from the sessions. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas ball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year, Art Society hosted a joint Christmas ball with the Norman Rea Gallery and Art History society. It was a collaborative event between three super arty societies. The committee told me how happy they were to bring these three societies together, all sharing their \u2018common interest in and love for art\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
