Whether you are already set on a University or still unsure about where to go, attending an Open Day will offer a new perspective on life as a student. Visiting York<\/a> helped me to finalise my decision because the lively atmosphere on campus and positive staff and students showed me a side to York beyond websites and league tables. Below are a few handy tips to help you make the most of your visit here:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Arrive early<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Open Days are a relaxed (and even fun) opportunity to learn more about life at York. Arriving as early as possible means that you should definitely be able to see and do everything on offer that day in an enjoyable way. All the talks are worth attending because they will help you make an informed decision. They offer enlightening information on things you may not have had a chance to think about yet, which leads me onto my next tip\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Be inquisitive <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An Open Day is one of the quickest ways to get an answer to any queries you or your family may have. Utilise any Q&A opportunities throughout the day and find out as much information as possible. There will also be plenty of ambassadors dotted around campus and I would suggest approaching them for a more laid-back and honest chat. It can be really reassuring speaking to University representatives face-to-face. So, have your questions ready, make lots of notes, and don\u2019t be afraid to speak to any of the staff or students. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Attend subject talks<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You should definitely attend the talks and mini-lectures for your prospective course, especially if you\u2019re still deciding which course you want to commit to. These subject talks are useful because they provide a small insight into what the course will entail. The lecturers and other members of the Department are a huge part of your Uni life. Being able to see their enthusiasm for the subject could really impact how you feel about the course. It’s also a great chance to maybe meet some potential course mates – I am still friends with one of the girls I sat next to on my Open Day! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Stay open-minded<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

York has such a vast range of accommodation options<\/a>. Where do you even begin to look on the Open Day? Having a look at the options online before you arrive will help you decide the best place to start on the day. The college system<\/a> is such a huge part of life at York. Visiting members of the college teams and speaking to them about college life<\/a> may bring up factors you had not considered before. For example, Alcuin College<\/a> being close to the library, or Derwent College<\/a> having the most football teams could be important to your decision making down the line. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Visit the city centre<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Open Day at York will hopefully be an exciting and interesting day, allowing you to explore the campus fully and engage with current students and staff. However, University life exists beyond there. This place could be your home for the next few years so it is well worth getting a feel for the wider city. My final tip is if you have time then take a stroll into the city centre or hop on a bus there. York is an upbeat, cultural, and beautiful place to live and when you are walking through the main centre you can see why. What better way to end the day than with a cup of coffee in a quirky cafe or a quick visit to the Minster?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
