Hi!<\/p>\n

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year, and are looking forward to the exciting year ahead!<\/p>\n

I thought with this post I would focus on York itself, because when choosing a university, the city in which it is based is always going to be a big influence on your decision, and the city of York is definitely a huge positive to studying here! I am sure that I don\u2019t need to tell you of its incredible history, stunning buildings and legendary cobbled streets, but that only scratches the surface of what the city really has to offer. This blog is dedicated to my top 10 things to do\/see\/eat\/drink in York to hopefully give you a real idea of what it is like living here!<\/p>\n

1. Sample the Cocktails at Evil Eye<\/h2>\n

York is renowned for its countless bars and pubs, but in my opinion (and that of many others!), Evil Eye is among the best. Alongside the vast array of cocktails and mocktails, the bar has a fantastic atmosphere and even offers beds as a means of seating, so you can really chill out and relax. If you needed any more persuading to pay the place a visit, Johnny Depp has been spotted drinking there!<\/p>\n

\"965630_10151688140298069_286396996_o\"<\/a>2. Brave the Original Ghost Walk of York<\/h2>\n

If you are brave enough, take a tour of York\u2019s most haunted locations and learn all about the ghosts that are present in the city! Why not go along and see if you can spot the infamous marching Roman Soldiers for yourself?<\/p>\n

3. A Day at York Racecourse<\/h2>\n

If horse racing is your thing, you want an excuse to dress up, or just want to have fun with friends, then a day at the races is perfect. If you wanted to visit the racecourse without all the hustle and bustle of a race day, then there are various other events held there throughout the year, such as Race for Life, Park Run and of course The University of York\u2019s annual Summer Ball.<\/p>\n

4. Explore York Minster<\/h2>\n

One of York\u2019s most outstanding features is the Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Not only does it house fascinating treasures and collections, but also hosts various events throughout the year, such as the Mystery Plays. As a student at York, you’re entitled to free entry, and it is a tradition for students at the university to climb the tower after graduation.<\/p>\n

5. Lunch in the Museum Gardens<\/h2>\n

On a summer\u2019s day the Museum Gardens is the perfect spot for picnic. Whilst you\u2019re there, why not take a look at the ruins of the Roman fort Eboracum or pay a visit to the Yorkshire Museum, both of which are situated within the gardens. A great day out for a student budget!<\/p>\n

6. Support the local team at Bootham Crescent<\/h2>\n

York City Football Club is greatly loved, both by local residents and those from further afield. Watching a match at Bootham Crescent is a great way to experience the passion that locals have for the club. You never know, you might become a big fan yourself!<\/p>\n

7. Burritos at Fiesta Latina<\/h2>\n

Fiesta Latina is one of the best Mexican restaurants in York, and their burritos have to been tried to be believed! As well as the incredible food and authentic atmosphere, they offer students 50% off at certain times throughout the week. What\u2019s not to love?!<\/p>\n

The Jorvik Viking Centre is a great way to learn about some of York\u2019s extensive history, offering the opportunity to see the remains of 1000 year old houses, take a tour around the Viking-age city of Jorvik, and learn more about the fascinating lives of the Vikings.<\/p>\n

9. Cupcakes at Crumbs<\/h2>\n

Crumbs is an independent cupcakery that offers the most delightful cupcakes in York. The flavours include Chocolate Orange, Raspberry Cheesecake (my personal favourite), Red Velvet and Caramel Fudge. With a stunning view of the Minster and its quaint d\u00e9cor, it is the perfect place to take a quick break from the busy city.<\/p>\n

Another of York\u2019s most incredible features, the walls circle the entire city centre and originally acted as a form of defence for the city. Today, the walls provide a great way to experience the stunning views provided by York, whilst learning of their history in the process.<\/p>\n

Of course these are just snippets of York, but it really is a fantastic city that has something for everyone. You shouldn’t just take my word for it though, come and see for yourself!<\/p>\n
