Campus West and Campus East<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The reason why I became interested in the University of York is because it has two impressive campuses. Both Campus West and East offer alternative living experiences: Campus West is lively and bustling, whilst Campus East is idyllic and contemporary. No matter which option you choose, the other is merely a short walk away and there is a free shuttle bus that can transport you between the two. At the heart of both is a beautiful lake and there are plenty of green areas to spend time in during the warmer months of the year. I must not neglect to mention the abundance of wildlife that comes with greenery – both sites are heavily populated by a large family of waterfowl and Campus East is frequently visited by rabbits and boasts a resident black swan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amazing law department<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to being spoilt for choice with campus options, I was keen to study at York because of the vast range of facilities the Law School offers. Another significant factor in my decision to study here, was the unique style of teaching within the department as this promotes a blend of independence and teamwork. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The university is keen to offer support to anyone who needs it. Whether this comes in the form of a friendly chat with the <\/span>Open Door Team <\/span><\/a><\/span>(a service that provides advice  for students in need), or a discussion with a tutor or lecturer (to clarify even a small part of your work), someone is always there on hand to help. If you would prefer to talk through any concerns with someone a little closer to your age, the university allocates second and third year mentors (STYM’s) to each flat – their job is to check in with you, to<\/span> ensure that you’re settling in and are comfortable. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends for life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of course, you can also find support in the form of the friendships you will undoubtedly forge, as I have been fortunate enough to do. Living five hours away, I did not know anyone who was planning on coming to York, so I was especially anxious about the social element of university living. However, I am certain that I have already made friends for life and believe that the current pandemic, if anything, has brought me closer to my flatmates. To make the most of these unprecedented times we come up with innovative ways to enjoy ourselves – from \u2018Come Dine With Me\u2019 evenings, movie marathons and pizza nights. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collegiate structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During these uncertain times, I have stayed in my flat more than I would have done had I been studying at York pre 2020. That being said, the collegiate structure of the university really makes you feel part of a community.  I am a part of Goodricke College<\/a> which goes out of their way to make you feel at home, by providing support and interactive activities. Regular competitions are offered (such as pasta, pizza and cookie making – prizes included!) and the university works hard to ensure that both campuses provide a safe place to live and study.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Societies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It goes without saying that a large array of student led <\/span>societies<\/span><\/a> are available for you to join when you arrive at York such as CatSoc, Amnesty International and Movie Society – there\u2019s even a Louis Theroux Society that you can pledge your allegiance to!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another reason I love this university is because York City <\/font><\/span>Centre is just a twenty minute bus journey away. The town is beautiful and hosts a wide range of shops and restaurants. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For any book lovers, I really recommend visiting the Minster Gate Bookshop – a quaint little store with a very Notting Hill-esque vibe. Those of you who are a fan of off-brand, vintage clothes, Chinese Laundry<\/a> is the place to visit. If you just want to wander, you can\u2019t go wrong with a walk through the <\/font><\/span>cobble stoned Shambles or the historic city walls. Next to the beautiful York Minster<\/a> (which is a must see) is the famous Crumbs Cupcakery<\/a>, or if that doesn\u2019t satisfy your hunger you can\u2019t go wrong with the Cosy Club<\/a> (renowned for their funky burgers). If you fancy a pizza Wildwood <\/a>comes highly recommended – with a 50% available for all students. So, as you can see the town isn\u2019t short of places to visit<\/span><\/span>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In summary…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So to conclude, these are my main reasons I chose York, I am loving my time here and I would highly recommend it as a home and place of study to anyone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, people that yearn for a picturesque city, supportive learning environment, good pizza and are a fan of ducks \/ Louis Theroux!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
