For many the transition to independent learning and living can be quite a scary change. But don\u2019t worry, there are plenty of ways to use your time productively over the summer to help you prepare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting ready to study<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing that you could be doing in your free time is getting ahead with any assigned reading for your course. Some departments will send out a reading list but don\u2019t hurry to buy loads of books as many are freely available through <a href=\"https:\/\/yorsearch.york.ac.uk\/primo-explore\/search?vid=44YORK-NUI\">YorSearch<\/a>, the university library\u2019s search tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think it\u2019s important to pace the reading as it enables a gradual exposure to more advanced academic work. Try not to over work yourself and remember that <strong>university life is more than just academia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn and practise new skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s face it, having domestic tasks to do is inevitable at uni. Be it cooking, cleaning, washing, budgeting (the list seems endless, I know); now is the perfect time to practise the essential life skills you\u2019ll need to use in everyday uni life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try cooking some simple meals at home or perhaps plan in advance how you aim to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/finance\/managing-your-money\/\">make your money last<\/a> each term. You don\u2019t have to become a domestic expert before you come. It\u2019s trying that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gain experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ve just finished your studies and have a long summer break off. Yay! It\u2019s time to relax. But you can also keep busy by doing some volunteering or part-time work in your free time. By doing so you can learn and develop new skills as well as meet new people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not update or make a C.V? You can search for helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/work-volunteering-careers\/apply\/application\/\">tips and advice<\/a> online if you require assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Research about student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From societies and sporting clubs you might want to join, to facilities on campus, start to think about what the next chapter of your life entails. The University\u2019s website provides details into everything you may want to learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/student-life\/\">student life at York<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before I arrived I researched what the University has to offer so I felt well informed and less apprehensive when uni began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get connected<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/social\/our-social-media\/our-social-directory\/\">social media groups<\/a> linked to the University, your department, and our Students\u2019 Union (YUSU), to connect with the York community before you arrive. &nbsp;Using the official social media of the University is a great way to make friends and meet new people, such as your flatmates and those on your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Most importantly, try not to be overwhelmed!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preparing for university can seem stressful but remember to have a relaxing summer.
