Hi, my name is Zoe and I am a third-year Sociology with Criminology student. I love York because it is such a welcoming place that has felt like a home away from home. I have made some amazing friends whilst being part of Langwith College and societies like Sociology Society<\/a> and African Caribbean Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arriving in York<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When I first arrived in York, I was a bit nervous. I did not think I would make friends because I have always been pretty shy and introverted. However, I guess most people feel like this when they first arrive at university. But upon my arrival at Langwith College, I instantly felt so welcome. Throughout Freshers’ Week, we had STYCS (Second- and Third-Year Contacts). They helped me settle in and show my flatmates and me around campus and the town. STYCS are usually allocated to each flat and will ensure that everyone is settling in and having a good time throughout Freshers’ Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BAME Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As well as this, Langwith College also has BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnic) Officers. They organise events throughout the year from meet-ups with Campus West and East colleges to different socials in town. These socials and meet-ups made my first-year experience so amazing. Not only was I able to meet some amazing friends who I now live with but I just loved being surrounded by people who were so friendly and made me feel so at home in York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I enjoyed being part of the BAME community at York so much, that at the end of my first year I decided to become the BAME Officer for Langwith College to try and make other people feel just as welcome as I did when I first joined the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SocSoc<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I also got involved with my course society, Sociology Society (SocSoc)<\/a> which was a great place to meet and interact with my coursemates. This came in handy if we struggled with the course content or if we just wanted to meet up for a chill study session before exams. Being a member of SocSoc has been truly such a fun experience. I loved all the themed nights-out and games nights-in, where I was able to meet such an array of really nice people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of this, in my second year, I even decided to join the committee with a few of my friends that I met whilst being a member of the African Caribbean Society. Not only did it help me gain more confidence as I had to interact with people from other departments and other students within the Sociology department. But I was able to plan multiple events for other students and make their university experience enjoyable as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
