Moving to a new city is hard. Moving all your stuff and making new friends might be at the front of your mind in the lead up to coming to university, but there are many practical things that you will have to work out in your first few weeks. As a disabled student, I understand that the stress of being in a new city can last months. You might know your hometown like the back of your hand, but starting again from scratch can be overwhelming. To try and help with this I’ve come up with some practical advice for living in York. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are things that you probably won\u2019t think to look up or ask about until you need them. They range from small things such as where to find the loos in town, to bigger things like where is the nearest A&E. Knowing these things might save you a headache later when you\u2019re trying to work it out. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bookmark this blog, so when your friends ask you if you want to go to the cinema in first term, you can look like an expert when you already know the cheapest one is Vue (spoilers).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So… where is the cheapest cinema?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are a few cinemas in the centre of York. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly there\u2019s Everyman<\/a> which is just a few minutes walk away from the train station. This one will set you back around \u00a310 for a student ticket. Alternatively you can buy a membership for \u00a350 a month that gets you unlimited access for you and for a friend.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other main cinema in York is the City Screen Picturehouse<\/a>. A student ticket here costs about \u00a311, but it can vary so it\u2019s worth checking out what deals they might have on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it\u2019s worth going a little out of town to Vue<\/a> at Clifton Moor. It\u2019s about 30 mins on the bus from the centre of York but tickets can cost as little as \u00a35, so if you don\u2019t mind travelling a bit it\u2019s by far the cheapest cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course I have to give a special shout out to York Student Cinema<\/a>. During term time they do \u00a33 tickets for members and \u00a34 for non-members. They screen movies a few times a week on campus. If you\u2019re dedicated you can even pay \u00a330 to get a yearly pass.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you get to the hospital and what can I access there?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

York Hospital<\/a> (or York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital to give it its full title) is just outside the centre of town. If you\u2019re coming from the train station it\u2019s about a 15-20 minute walk. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an emergency you should dial 999 and call an ambulance as you can in the rest of the UK. However, if 999 is not appropriate it\u2019s useful to know: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
