If you asked me to describe Christmas at York in one word, it would undoubtedly have to be \u2018magical\u2019. York City Centre is a kaleidoscope of colour during the Christmas period; glistening lights line the streets and festive music echoes throughout the markets. And as if that wasn\u2019t enough incentive to come to York, the Bailey\u2019s hot chocolate stalls are to die for<\/strong>! In my opinion, York is one of the best cities to spend Christmas in<\/a>. Hopefully, after reading this blog post, you\u2019ll agree with me too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

York Christmas Markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As well as looking beautiful, the York Christmas Markets<\/a> are one of the best places to go and hang out with your friends at this time of year. Or to pick up your loved ones a cute independent gift<\/a>! Providing a great backdrop for insta-worthy flat-selfies, the atmosphere at the markets would even make the Grinch feel festive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My personal favourite part of the markets, however, has to be the Carousel. My housemate and I went on it, and honestly, it felt like we were 8 again\u2026 I mean, what more could you ever want? And to top it all off, we had the nicest <\/strong>Baileys hot chocolate and cr\u00eapes. A fantastic end to a brilliant night, if I say so myself! Safe to say, we peaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History Society Winter Formal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, shout out to the History Society<\/a> who managed to pull off such an amazing winter formal. The food, the company, and the location were all perfect! Taking place at the Hilton in York<\/a>, it was amazing to finally<\/strong> be able to dress up in ball gowns and take to the dance floor! I call it dancing, some might call it awkward shuffling to the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The afterparty at Flares<\/a> was a blast too, although the free wine had definitely started to hit. Most societies throw winter formals, and if you ever get the chance, I\u2019d highly recommend attending one. I only knew about three people who were going but came back with a whole group of new friends. And an inflated ego from all the compliments on my dress\u2026 but we all need an ego-boost sometimes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Kirkgate Christmas Tale- York Castle Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The York Castle Museum<\/a> is brilliant all year round, but at Christmas it\u2019s honestly unbelievable! With Kirkgate Street covered in a blanket of snow, it\u2019s as if you\u2019ve stepped back in time to Christmas during the Victorian period. Projections line the walls, and there\u2019s even functioning shops throughout the street. It truly is a 4D experience, just without the overpriced popcorn!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I won\u2019t tell you too much about it now, you must go and experience it yourself! It\u2019s well-priced and the tickets last twelve months, so you can go and visit as much as you want during that time! There’s lots of different exhibitions at the museum, although I must say that the Kirkgate Street is definitely my favourite part!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ended the day by attending the \u2018Carols at the Minster\u2019 service. I had an absolutely wonderful time and even got a free mince pie, so a big thank you to the universities\u2019 Christian Unions<\/a>\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deck the (Student) Halls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t live in student halls<\/a> anymore, but my housemate would actually disown me if I wasted the pun opportunity. Decorating your house is unquestionably one of the best parts of Christmas. And at university you can get away with starting to decorate even earlier. It\u2019s really a win-win situation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, for some reason, we decided to make our own Christmas wreath. Our neighbours probably thought we were totally crazy cutting branches from our driveway dressed in PJs, but YOLO\u2026 right??! The wreath took pride of place next to our snowflake-decorated windows and was eventually joined by a Christmas elf. We named him Ralph.
Spending quality time decorating with your flat is so, so wholesome\u2013and a fun, well-deserved break from academia. So, make sure you decorate your house\u2013even if it\u2019s just some tinsel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only thing that could make this year\u2019s Christmas at York any better would be making a snowman. So please, PLEASE manifest some snow for me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas at #York is utterly magical. Between the twinkling lights and the infamous Christmas markets, even the Grinch would be feeling #festive! \ud83c\udf81 With many events taking place, such as @uycu_ \u2018s \u2018Carols at the Minster\u2019, and @uoyhistorysoc \u2018s Winter Formal, Christmas is all around you! Even just taking a stroll through the Christmas markets, or the Kirkgate Christmas Tale Street at @yorkcastlemuseum, you can\u2019t help but smile!\ud83c\udf84 Not only picturesque, the atmosphere in York during the Christmas period is super wholesome! Beautifully decorated #Christmas trees and delicious food stalls fill the streets, attracting visitors from all over the world. The air is full of happiness, and the smell of doughnuts- although I don\u2019t know which is better!\ud83c\udf69 So, grab a Baileys hot chocolate and take a ride on the carousel\u2026\ud83c\udfa0 I promise you won\u2019t regret it! Or just spend the afternoon inside decorating your house in #Christmassy pyjamas! The opportunities are endless. York is the place to be during the winter months. My only advice would be to make sure you bring a bobble-hat and gloves\ud83e\udde4, it\u2019s pretty cold up north!
