{"id":9085,"date":"2022-03-01T10:58:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T10:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=9085"},"modified":"2022-06-30T10:14:27","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T09:14:27","slug":"a-week-in-the-life-of-a-1st-year-film-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2022\/03\/01\/a-week-in-the-life-of-a-1st-year-film-student\/","title":{"rendered":"A Week in the Life of a 1st-Year Film Student"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019d asked me what I was looking forward to on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/bsc-film-television-production\/\">Film and TV Production course at York<\/a>, I would have said writing; writing stories, scripts, treatments, films, episodes, all of it! Of course, knowing me, I\u2019d probably ramble on about it for a good few minutes too.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And, so, when I was assigned my first writing assessment, I couldn\u2019t be more excited or more daunted. I remember seeing the announcement pop up and grinning, running story idea after story idea through the reel of my imagination, before pausing \u2013 what<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if I write something that isn\u2019t <\/span><\/i><b><i>good?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, as I have realised throughout my first term, that\u2019s not what it\u2019s all about. So, I\u2019ll be documenting my progress over the next week or so to show you fellow perfectionists that, hey, even assessments can be fun (at least when you\u2019re in Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media anyway.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Baby Steps<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While I\u2019m sure some of you reading this will read the phrase \u2018Story Proposal\u2019 and nod, fully aware of what it means and how to write one, I\u2019m also sure that most of you will see that phrase and think the exact same thing that I did:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What the hell does that mean, and how do you even attempt to write one?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was intimidated at first; after all, a proposal that markets, defines and breaks your story down to its basic elements seems so reductive. It was something that I thought was exclusive to industry professionals. Of course, I forgot we were learning how to be those industry professionals.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But, in actuality, I found writing a story proposal not only interesting (which is obviously a huge help when it comes to assessments), but also super beneficial to developing my story.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story proposal involves a sort of log line, followed by a short plot outline. Initially, I thought <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pfft, I know about story structure \u2013 we studied this last week! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But transforming my plot into tangible sentences highlighted the plot holes that glared up at me in the form of typed words on a screen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And then sharing these story proposals with my seminar groups gave me the opportunity to see my story from different perspectives. Too often, we\u2019re so caught up in our ideas that we forget that the story is actually received by other people. So, it was really refreshing to get feedback from my seminar leader about the most basic but important elements of my story.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And, yes, sharing can be scary (trust me as a person with anxiety) but I\u2019m so glad I did<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span>Despite<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the initial mistakes in my story, in the end, I know it can only help me out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Laying the Groundwork<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, I\u2019ve had feedback on my story itself. Great! But what do I do now? You\u2019ve read it; you know what needs fixing \u2013 but how do you fix that?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For me, plans are the things that keep me organised (and keep me sane). After getting this feedback, I sketched up a sort of skeleton plot outline<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span>E<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">diting and readjusting the story beats or character elements that I was told may need altering for a more s<\/span>olid <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">overall structure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The thing that really helped me constantly innovate and reflect upon my story idea was the fact that our f<\/span>irst-term <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lectures, despite being on various areas of filmmaking and TV production, all weaved together to form a more well-rounded perspective of filmmaking and storytelling in general. This meant that I was able to go into the Holbeck Cinema, which is where you will watch most of your module screenings, and watch the essential screenings.<\/span> Then I&#8217;d<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> use what I\u2019d learn<\/span>ed<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to extract elements from the films and apply or compare them to my own ideas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tak<\/b><b>ing the Leap<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Backspace: a writer\u2019s most used button (probably.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Getting started is always the hardest part. <\/span>P<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">erfectionists will know the agony of trying to write an award-winning script right off the bat.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In getting past this hurdle, I remembered the writing activity we did in a seminar recently. In pairs, we wrote dialogue for a short scene, one line at a time<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lternating between the two of us in the pair. It shifted the focus from a scene to a line<\/span>. H<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">elping you just keep writing instead of freezing and agonising over whether everything was perfect.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Obviously, I don\u2019t have a partner for this assessment, but writing in a similar way for my first draft has really helped me get my ideas down, rough as they are.
