{"id":9221,"date":"2022-02-09T15:52:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/?p=9221"},"modified":"2022-06-29T16:19:46","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:19:46","slug":"week-in-the-life-of-a-4th-year-maths-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/2022\/02\/09\/week-in-the-life-of-a-4th-year-maths-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Week in the Life of a 4th-Year Maths Student"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This blog is about the typical week of a Maths student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m currently in my fourth year, studying four modules this term in addition to working on my final-year project. I also volunteer as a PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Leader, I\u2019m one of the 4th-Year course representatives, and I work for Mathematics at Open Days. I like to stay busy, so I tend to have quite a lot on during the week!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mondays are always a full-on start to the week. I have four lectures \u2013 one for each of the modules I am taking this term.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of those modules I\u2019m studying is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/studying\/manage\/programmes\/module-catalogue\/module\/MAT00051M\/latest\">Analytic Number Theory<\/a>. In the lectures for this course, we have been learning about some of the properties of the Riemann zeta function, which is the subject of the famous Riemann Hypothesis, which you may have heard of. It&#8217;s really cool to be studying something that leads to such deep mathematics.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the afternoon, I had a meeting with my <\/span>fellow course representatives. Basically, this role involves gathering feedback from everyone in my year and sharing it with staff at regular meetings. There&#8217;s a meeting with staff happening later in the week, and we had a pre-meeting to talk through the agenda items and prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tuesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"411\" height=\"744\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263586976_497853338571173_3500613208112650358_n-3.jpg?resize=411%2C744\" alt=\"A lovely sunset viewed through a window in the Maths Department study space\" class=\"wp-image-9216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263586976_497853338571173_3500613208112650358_n-3.jpg?w=411&amp;ssl=1 411w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263586976_497853338571173_3500613208112650358_n-3.jpg?resize=166%2C300&amp;ssl=1 166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I had two lectures in the morning, and then spent the rest of the day working in the undergraduate study space in Mathematics. I spend quite a lot of time in there \u2013 there are chalkboards you can use, and lots of friends to discuss maths with.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wednesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9215 aligncenter\" style=\"font-size: 16px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/262731700_1704802209723680_1066820570597724784_n-2.jpg?resize=432%2C315\" alt=\"Molly wearing her purple Student Ambassador hoodie\" width=\"432\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/262731700_1704802209723680_1066820570597724784_n-2.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/262731700_1704802209723680_1066820570597724784_n-2.jpg?resize=300%2C219&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today I had two lectures and a seminar. Seminars are small group teaching sessions, where you can ask questions and try out problems for yourself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of these seminars is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/students\/studying\/manage\/programmes\/module-catalogue\/module\/MAT00049M\/latest\">Metric Number Theory<\/a>. This module is one of my favourites this term. The course is exploring how well we can approximate any real number with rational numbers (fractions).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently, we have been looking at Khintchine\u2019s Theorem, which gives a way to find out the size of a particular set of numbers we are interested in. The lecturer teaching this course is actively researching this area of maths, and has used the results we are learning in his own work, which really helps bring lectures to life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wednesday afternoons are my favourite time of the week! I work as a Student Ambassador, helping at Visit Days. I get to chat with prospective students, give tours of campus, and even run a mini-seminar to give a taste of uni-style learning.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"581\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263642490_657443362035701_1417126907689297960_n-2.jpg?resize=581%2C404\" alt=\"Some sleeping geese in the courtyard outside the Maths Department\" class=\"wp-image-9218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263642490_657443362035701_1417126907689297960_n-2.jpg?w=581&amp;ssl=1 581w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263642490_657443362035701_1417126907689297960_n-2.jpg?resize=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today was super busy due to a lecture being rescheduled from Friday. One of my classes was a problems class \u2013 this is where the lecturer goes over lots of examples and shows you how to answer questions. This class isn\u2019t held in the Maths building, so I got the chance to wander across campus, which was looking very autumnal and lovely.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I also helped at a PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) session for 1st-Years. Each week we give an hour-long session to support their introductory stats and probability module. We give hints for the homework, and talk through how to answer questions. This has been a really great experience \u2013 it\u2019s definitely true that teaching a topic helps you to understand it better yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263871112_930263207919675_2078323462905792005_n.jpg?resize=736%2C560\" alt=\"Maths on a chalkboard. This was my attempt at an algebraic geometry assignment.\" class=\"wp-image-9219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263871112_930263207919675_2078323462905792005_n.jpg?w=736&amp;ssl=1 736w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.york.ac.uk\/student-voices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/12\/263871112_930263207919675_2078323462905792005_n.jpg?resize=300%2C228&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On this particular week, I didn\u2019t have any lectures on Friday, so it was a nice relaxing end to the week.&nbsp;I went along to help at the 1st-Year drop-in session \u2013 this is a session where 1st-Years can ask older students, PhD students and lecturers any questions that they have about their modules. The transition to university maths can be a bit of a jump, but there are lots of activities such as this to make it as smooth as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I also try to schedule some time each Friday to work on my final-year project. I am exploring the <em>abc<\/em> Conjecture, which is a problem in number theory. At the moment, I\u2019m reading lots of papers to try and understand the topic, and later on this year I\u2019ll be writing it all up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saturday and Sunday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although I spent a bit of time working on some assignments that were due the following week, I try to keep my weekends fairly free of uni work. I usually end up spending some of the time doing \u201cchores\u201d \u2013 this week I had to go shopping, do laundry and give my flat a tidy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Saturday afternoon, I went round to a friend\u2019s house for a board game night. It was really nice to unwind and forget about maths for a while \u2013 although we did end up discussing the optimal card shuffling method while we played UNO! <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ap-custom-wrapper\"><\/div><!--ap-custom-wrapper-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog is about the typical week of a Maths student.
