I&#8217;m Sophia. I&#8217;m in my second year studying Psychology at York, and in Vanbrugh College. <\/span>In thi<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s blog,<\/span> I aim <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t<\/span>o <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">give you a useful insight into how York\u2019s Psychology staff can support you in becoming an independent researcher.<\/span> As a result, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you\u2019<\/span>ll be<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a strong position to review existing studies on a topic.<\/span> You&#8217;ll go on to<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conduct your own research projects during your degree<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in y<\/span>our <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">areas o<\/span>f <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interest. I\u2019ll also highlight how these skills can be really useful in your future career.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To be honest with you, I was a bit worried before I started at York about how good I\u2019d be at doing my own research, because I\u2019d never really done it before. They s<\/span>howed <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">h<\/span>ow <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to use sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\">Google Scholar<\/a>, which I now rely on for every assignment. <\/span>H<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">onestly, it\u2019s a lifesaver once you\u2019re familiar with it!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From first term onwards, you\u2019ll do various small assignments involving simple independent research, such as essays. <\/span>For essays, y<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ou&#8217;<\/span>ll<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> summarise existing research on the topic, then answer the question based on the research. You\u2019ll also write practical reports, describing a study you\u2019ve run in class, what you found, and how this adds to existing research. These assignments are great for developing skills you may not have used much before.<\/span> For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reading research papers concisely (e.g. scanning the introduction and conclusion first)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">choosing papers which are the most relevant to your assignment and are also trustworthy<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">describing studies you or others have done<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving your skills through a mini project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another k<\/span>ey <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">part of the course t<\/span>hat will <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">improve your independent research skills is the mini project. Thi<\/span>s <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">group work<\/span> project takes place at the end of Year 1. Y<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ou pick a research question w<\/span>hich <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interests<\/span> the whole group<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. You\u2019ll split up the project so you each have your own tasks involving independent research.<\/span> B<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ut, you still have the support of the rest of the group, so you can help each other out and bounce ideas off each other. I found this particularly helpful p<\/span>roject. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My group suggested different ways to approach research tasks that I hadn\u2019t considered at all before. I\u2019ve actually gone on to keep using those <\/span>approaches.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he wonderful \u2018cited by\u2019 button in Google Scholar <\/span>is a great example. It&#8217;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s a super helpful shortcut for finding more papers related to a topic!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These tasks given to you are spread throughout 1st and 2nd year, meaning you have plenty of time to develop all of the skills really well, getting detailed feedback after every one. This h<\/span>elps you <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prepare  well f<\/span>or <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your big 3rd year independent project. For this project, you pick a topic; research existing studies<\/span>; then <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conduct your own research.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are these skills useful?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The independent research skills you\u2019re taught will last you far beyond 3rd year though &#8211; they\u2019ll be useful for a range of careers. Obviously, r<\/span>esearch skills <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have direct application in a research-based career (either in psychology or another field)<\/span>. S<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kills include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reading existing literature in the field<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seeing what&#8217;s already been shown and where the gaps are<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how to back up everything you claim with sources<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> But the skills are also applicable to a multitude of careers that aren&#8217;t research-based: for example, thinking critically about material you read, planning your time well, scanning through long documents to pick out the key information, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personally, I\u2019m really interested in becoming an educational psychologist, or a primary school teacher specialising in SEN (special educational needs), so I\u2019ll be able to use the skills I\u2019ve developed to read reports more quickly, saving myself lots of time, and to find important information about different developmental disorders online by using my skills in identifying trustworthy sources and being familiar with online psychology journals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, there we go! Hopefully this has given you a good idea of the sorts of independent research projects you\u2019d conduct on the York psychology course, and how Psychology staff supports you throughout to develop the skills you need to be able to do these projects really successfully.
