Hi, I’m Olivia. I’m <\/span>a 2nd-Year Global Development s<\/span>tudent, which means I was part of the first cohort to take this course. Although the course leaders were helpful <\/span>about what to expect<\/span> from the course, hearing from a c<\/span>urrent student can be v<\/span>ery beneficial. Therefore, I<\/span>‘m here to tell you the main elements of <\/span>my week as a Global Development student.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course Content  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In each year of the course, there will be a set of core modules<\/span>, as well as optional modules. As the course is run by three subjects \u2013 Geography, History and Politics \u2013 there is a wide selection of optional modules<\/a> to choose from<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my first year, I chose to take three optional modules from each of these subjects<\/span>. This was so I did<\/span>n’t narrow my area of knowledge too much<\/span> when I have the luxury of studying an interdisciplinary degree.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I also wanted to do this because I had not studied Politics or History before<\/span>. I was worried that this would negatively affect me<\/span>, but I needn’t have. University is about learning, and<\/span> everybody has <\/span>some gaps in their knowledge.<\/span> Choosing a range of modules also helped me to discover what my interests were<\/span>. After completing my first year,<\/span> I r<\/span>ealised my interests lay more in Politics and History.<\/span> So, I chose not to take any Geography modules in my second year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest change from school to university was that <\/span>nobody was chasing me up for not working. Study is very independent here, meaning motivation comes from you. It is very easy t<\/span>o be distracted when there are so many events taking place around you<\/span>. Although these social and extracurricular activities are important, you do need to try to focus. In a normal week, you need to put aside the time for independent study and treat university like a 9-5 job.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities  <\/span>for Global Development students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The opportunities available to everyone in university are massive<\/span>! Bu<\/span>t as a Global Development student, you will be under three subjects, so<\/span> you will <\/span>have access to even more. I receive the weekly Learning Community Newsletter, which is delivered from Politics.<\/span> This advertises the events taking place that week that may be of interest. Some examples of this are \u201cReviewing \u2018White Fragility\u2019: Psychoanalysis with racism \u2013 Adam Phillips’ Autumn Term Lecture\u201d event<\/span>. Or the \u201cVoice from the Global South \u2013 post-COP26 session\u201d online event. <\/span>It also acknowledges other things, such as the \u2018Political Duck\u2019, which is a\u00a0podcast run by the Politics Society. Other Global Development-related societies and general University societies can be found\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0if you would like to explore them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assessment  <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I am writing this in early December, s<\/span>o I have just finished one of my assessments<\/span>. Therefore, it may be useful to hear about the type of assessment that is completed for a Global Development core module. In my Issues and Skills in Global Development module, it was required as a summative assessment (summative work is assessed and counts towards your final grade; formative work is used for feedback and does not count towards your final grade) to complete a group presentation. This was done as a debate<\/span>, presented in front of the rest of the cohort. Alongside this, we needed to individually complete a self-evaluation. This is one example of the type of assessment you would be required to complete<\/span>. Other assessments include essays and research projects.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
