The big day had finally arrived: the Summer Ball.
Getting ready
My housemate Rosie and I woke up early to head to Bang hair salon on Bishopthorpe Road for a wash and blow dry. Back at the house, there was a buzz as everyone started getting ready before we all spilled out into the garden to get some photos. Surprisingly, we all scrubbed up pretty well!
Drinks reception at Heslington Hall
Despite a mixed forecast, the sun put on a good show, and at Heslington Hall we enjoyed a drinks reception on the lawn with prosecco and bucks fizz. Sunshine and bubbles – a perfect combination.
Off to the Races
We rode in style, in vintage buses to the York Races where the main event was taking place. My
friends and I had lots of time to enjoy the fairground rides including bumper cars, a Ferris wheel and spinning teacups. Having early access meant we hardly had to queue and there were also sweet stands and face paint available, all included in our ticket.
Time for dinner
After a few hours whizzing around on the rides and chattering away, we were called inside for a
delicious three-course dinner. The brownie was to die for and we all left feeling very full. There was also wonderful music played by York’s very own student musicians.
The fun continues
The racecourse was now starting to get very busy as the first and second year students arrived. The festivities continued long into the night with music sets from Everything, Everything, MistaJam and Nadia Rose amongst others. They all put on a great show.
Despite our heels, we powered on through and five of us managed to make it to the notorious 4am survivor’s photo outside the racecourse.
A fond farewell…
Since attending Summer Ball in first year when I was a little fresher and now as a third year about to graduate into the big, wide world, I’ve had a wonderful three years at York. The event was a fantastic way to round off my time at university. All I can say is, it’s been a ball!
The Summer Ball is an annual event organised by the Students' Union (YUSU).
