York’s campus has loads of places to eat, all with different vibes. A lot of them run a ‘Not for Profit Just for Students’ ethos, which means all the profit goes straight back into our campus. Here are some of my favourite places:
Courtyard
Courtyard in Derwent College is my favourite bar on campus. It’s a cosy environment and in a really central location. They run lots of events, like karaoke on a Friday which is super fun.
My favourite thing to eat there is the nachos. Your plate is piled high with all the toppings you can imagine and its really good value. They also do some really nice salads if you are looking for a healthier option. All of the food on campus is priced well, I think they have definitely realised their market is hungry students on a budget.
Costa at RKC
I also really like the Costa at the Rodger Kirk Centre in James College. They do delicious paninis and cake and it’s the closest café to the gym. Many hours have been spent lounging around on the (almost always) empty sofas eating cheesy toasties with the rest of my sports team.
Starbucks in Wentworth
This one’s a bit of a hidden cafe, but if you prefer Starbucks branded drinks it’s worth the slightly longer walk to Wentworth College. They also have sandwiches and hot food as it is college catering and there’s always loads of seats. It’s a good place to work as well if the library is busy at exam time.
Alcuin Kitchen
Alcuin kitchen is right next to the library so can be another option for a break if you want to get a bit further away from the books than you would in the Library Cafe.
During exam season, the Students’ Union (YUSU) offer free toast, tea, hot chocolate and hugs and board games for when you need to unwind a bit from the stress of exams.
Greggs Campus East
New for this academic year, a Greggs has opened on Hes East for all your steak bake and vegan sausage roll needs. Hot pastry is definitely worth the windy walk through the other campus.
There are lots of other places to eat on both campuses as well that I haven’t mentioned – these are just my favourites! Hopefully you can discover yours when you get here.
