Welcome to the city of York! What are your plans for the day? Visiting the York Minster, the City Walls and The Shambles is definitely a must; but check out these charming spots around town that may be not on your guide book. These are some hidden gems in York.
The Imaginarium
This is my absolute favourite shop in all of York! Located on Blake Street next to ‘The Yorkshire Soap Company‘, this shop is filled with whimsical trinkets and stunning curiosities. Step right in and you’ll be transported to a magical land filled with odd items and a mysterious ambiance. Don’t forget to check out the back of the store at Christmas!
Bistro at no. 8 Gillygate
So you’ve probably heard that you must have afternoon tea at Betty’s; but I’m here to tell you to get lunch in this quaint bistro hidden outside the walls of York. The warmth and coziness of this bistro greets you as soon as you enter. Have I mentioned that they also have a secret garden with a view of the York City Walls? Their dishes are some of the best I’ve ever had. From their risotto to their couscous, you can never go wrong! Every plate is carefully made with love and quality; trust me when I say that!
York Museum Gardens
You will probably pass this spot on your way to York Minster from the train station, but do not hesitate to enter. Inside is a beautiful garden that is full of blooms during spring and the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey.
It’s the perfect place to relax and stretch out your legs, or maybe consider visiting during warmer seasons to have a picnic.
The Blue Barbakan
Another one of my favourite restaurants in town; this time it’s Polish food. Located on Fossgate, just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, this restaurant serves impeccable Polish food with a twist. You can visit them for breakfast and have their amazing Full English, or maybe go for lunch and get the Hungarian Potato Pancake with Goulash. Don’t forget to end it with some cakes!
Botanic
Last but not least is my go-to shop for plants. What better way to decorate and spice up your room with some houseplants?
Not only do they sell adorable succulents, but they also have interesting plants as well (maybe some of you want a venus flytrap for your room). They also have larger houseplants such as the ‘monstera’ for sale, so make sure you give this shop in Walmgate a drop!
There’s just so many things to do and discover in York, and I’ve only given you the tip of the iceberg on what this city has to offer. My best tip for you to explore the hidden gems in York; don’t be afraid to take those little alleys and get lost!
