Choosing a university
So – you’ve decided to study abroad – great decision! It’s now time to start preparing yourself for settling into a UK university. Great preparations make for a smoother sailing experience. To prepare yourself for studying in the UK, first and foremost, start a thorough search for the best universities in the UK. Once you have done searching, make a list of all the universities that you would consider applying to. Once you have done that, do a thorough search of those shortlisted universities. Find the courses available, the fee structure, facilities available and also the contact details of the departments that you would consider joining.
Contact the departments
After that, you could prepare a list of questions that you seek answers to and mail it to those shortlisted departments. You could also seek support by sending queries to the university’s general information desk as well, should you have any trouble finding contacts to specific departments that are on your wish list. Once all of these above steps are done and you have gotten satisfactory answers to your queries, start making a list of documents and supporting materials that you would need for your applications. Once all the documents are in place, the process of applying becomes an easy task. After you have applied, patiently wait for a response.
Congratulations; you’ve been accepted!
Now that you have got an offer to one of the best universities in the UK, it is time to prepare yourself for the best time of your life! As stated earlier, preparation is the key to making the most out of any experience. This almost becomes a requirement when you decide to travel far across to another country and start a new life there. Coming to study in a foreign land can be full of excitement and adventures, but it can also be overwhelming sometimes. So, in order to prepare yourself, you should firstly acquaint yourself with the country by reading up about it. Check out relevant books, online materials, blogs, social media, magazines etc. This way you will learn more about the local culture, cuisines, the best places to shop and the best places to stay.
Accommodation
Being well informed will give you the confidence to settle down properly in the country. Another important thing to do before making your move is to do a thorough search of the best accommodation services within your budget and book it. Landing in any country without booking accommodation anywhere is a recipe for disaster. You want to avoid that at any cost! Once you have booked your accommodation, you can relax as you have dealt with a big part of the process.
Get to know the campus
Once you have arrived in the UK and have moved into your accommodation, it is important to get yourself familiarised with the campus. Go to campus tours and introductory talks. The Freshers’ Fair is one of the best things that takes place at the start of the term. You can get all the information about societies, clubs and activities that take place at the University throughout the year. One very important thing to keep in mind is to never miss a fire talk or you shall be fined! This is very important if you are staying in University accommodation.
Support
There are also support systems within the university, both for academic support and for your well-being. It’s helpful to get information on all the support systems available. That way you can have a pleasant sojourn at the University and have the best time of your life. Lastly, but most importantly, always put in the needed hours to your study, as that is what you are here for.
I hope you now have an idea as to what it’s like settling in to a UK university. I wish you a pleasurable experience in the UK!
