Struggling to find black hair shops? Wondering where to buy Maggi to season your food? Well look no further, DEBORAH IS HERE!!
Growing up in London I could always know there was a good black hair shop around the corner. Stepping in you know that there would be Got2Be glue and Eco Styler gel always ready and available! No matter what I knew that these hair shops were there in abundance.
HOWEVER. Coming to York was very different. I was not able to find the black hair shop, food market or even restaurants until I was nearly done first year! Imagine being stuck to seasoning your food with no scotch bonnet or jerk seasoning. Regardless of the change of scene from London to York there is still hope!
Where is the hair shop?
When I found out where this hair shop was, I instantly needed to buy some shea butter! Hair World is where it is meant to be, from hairpieces to wigs you can come to this shop regularly. Not only that but it is really local less than 15 minutes away from the university! I have been able to buy most combs that have broken because of my 4C hair from here so do not worry about that too. Wondering where to buy extensions for your braids? Hair World. Wondering where to get Pro Concealer? Hair World. Wondering where to buy lip gloss? Hair World.
BUT is this the only place, I hear you ask! Of course not. The2Glamz Beauty studio in Leeds which is only 20 minutes away from York! Very close and local. So, you do not need to worry about where you can get your necessary hair products, it is here!
What about my seasoning?!
Seasoning is essential. From experience, I can tell you not having Jumbo Chicken seasoning or no Maggi my food feels incomplete. I was able to find an awesome food shop, again very local. Makkah International not only has plantain, scotch bonnet and chin-chin but I can buy curry goat, chicken and lamb! I honestly thought this was great because I love plantain, it makes me feel like I am back home in London which is always nice. Makkah would be your first stop to buy all your bay leave and thyme so do not stress about where to get your seasonings.
Talking about food, I know you are thinking, what if I want to go out to eat some Ackee and Saltfish? You know what I am going to say … don’t stress about it! York has it here. Turtle Bay has to be your first stop! There is no question about it. I have tried their curry goat and it was great. So, you and your friends do not want to cook, go to Turtle Bay.
Luckily this cannot be the only place, right? Of course, Tanur Foods is there for Nigerian cuisine whilst Los Moros is there for all my North Africans! York is surprisingly more diverse that people think.
So, no matter whether you are looking for new bundles of hair or fresh plantain, York actually has it here. So, do not what? (Everyone says…) DO NOT WORRY!

This article is amazing and has answered all the questions I had running in my head if I were to move to York. As a black student is also from London and is planning to go to the University of York, this is extremely important. Thank you, Deborah!
