York is well known for being a historical city. Students can explore Roman and Viking features in the city. In addition, they can expand their interests at the university. My goal in coming to the UK to study a Masters in Global Marketing was to gain a more international perspective on the global industry of marketing. The diversity in the UK also appealed to me because it has a rich cultural combination of students from countries such as India and other European nations.
Course structure and Teaching methods
The university offers you the chance to develop your academic and career prospects with well-designed courses. The materials selected by the professors are practical and intriguing. You will find your passion when you absorb the information from the lectures. Also, you will develop your professional skills during your seminars.
The International Business Strategy module uses a classic case study – Banana Republics in Central America – to address an intriguing and controversial issue. This allows students to explore social, environmental, economic, political and legal aspects in the real business world. The Marketing Planning module looks at how Disney adapts itself to diverse global cultures. The module uses the National Football Museum as a case study. Learning throughout the course is rooted in practical issues. I was inspired to be more curious by the fascinating business models under discussion. I began to dig deeper into the chosen cases for the assessment. So, despite the pandemic, I was able to gain knowledge from around the world while earning a ticket for a career. What a fruitful deal!
Completing a Masters degree in a different country
I never expected that I could progress so fast within one year. The learning environment in the university is flexible. But, good performance requires self-discipline. In Asia, the learning experience in the class is relatively passive. However, the culture in the UK encourages me to raise an active voice in class discussion by asking questions. Some Asian students express their worries about making mistakes and asking what they think might be stupid questions. But, you don’t always make mistakes, do you? So be confident, be curious and accept that making mistakes is an opportunity to improve.
I completed a Digital Marketing module where I worked on an innovation proposal with my beloved coursemates. This was a practical programme that made me more comfortable expressing my ideas. I had a wonderful collaborative experience working with students from around the world.
Social life and working with others
During my Masters in Global Marketing, it was an exciting experience to work with people from different backgrounds. This is because the group programme structure was generated by members’ ideas. In each meeting, we all shared our thoughts and different material we had produced. Also, we discussed how the material contributed to the project. You will be amazed by your multinational members with different career or life experiences. These experiences shape how they assign materials and the angles from which they view the project. During the working period, I received uplifting energy from my friends and the advanced ongoing programme with diversity. When I completed the programme, I was more confident in applying various professional sources. I received a sense of achievement and I had an incredible experience in a productive team.
At the end of the summer term, the university organised a Postgraduate Mid-year Ball in Hospitium, one of York’s oldest buildings. We celebrated an academic milestone with a three-course dinner and disco. The building is in the city centre and dates back to the 14th century!
I went there with my friends from the Digital Marketing module. At the dinner party, I dressed formally to dine with students from different courses and danced before and after mealtime. Dinner parties are fantastic occasions for international students to dive deeper into British culture.
What do you intend to do with the degree? What you’ll take away with you?
Every student can sharpen their career skills with professional module leaders. On the Masters in Global Marketing course, previous students have had careers in multinational enterprises such as L’Oréal UK, Amazon and Coca-Cola. You can choose your intended case for assessments and explore that with the assessment markers’ advice.
Finally, I appreciate myself much more by comparing myself to how I was before the start of the journey. I learned to think more critically, cooperate with others, learn from collaboration and gained better organisational skills. Also, I have good memories with great friends and a rich travel experience. I see my future in UK aviation marketing. I have no doubt that an exciting future is waiting for me.
